LO and the TV

Does anyone know when babies start to actually process or absorb what they see on TV?  I'm a SAHM and during the day the TV is off; the only TV he sees is when we're eating and he's usually playing next to me on the couch for 30 minutes or so in the evening.  I complain and make DH change he channel if he puts on anything with violence, etc, because I feel like LO can understand that, but DH doesn't think he does.  Any thoughts?  TIA!

Re: LO and the TV

  • I think they are getting close to an age where they can understand tone, so if a movie has yelling or anger I think they can tell.  I know if you yell around my LO now she gets a really serious face and looks confused/sad, where she used to just be startled by the noise.

  • We only have the TV playing Sesame Street, the news, or a sporting event (or Fashion Police--Maggie loves Joan Rivers) when Maggie's up.  We save our good and violent stuff for when she's gone to bed, mostly because we like to watch them together.

I realize that sounds really weird, but we watch something like Sons of Anarchy together because we both really like that show and it's REALLY violent.

  • Miss H has loved Baby First channel since day one. Whenever I was getting ready or couldn't be interacting with her, I would put her in her swing and let her watch it. It is now part of her morning routine.

However this is all she is allowed to pay attention to. I take that back sometimes we watch the Big Bang Theory in front of her...but who doesn't love Sheldon.

  • Thanks guys!  I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion.  We do Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother (or something else like that) usually in the evening, so I don't feel so bad but sometimes DH will put on Boardwalk Empire On demand or something like that which I prefer we would watch once LO goes to sleep!
  • We try to stick to Disney Junior during the day... We'll watch Big Bang, HIMYM, etc. at night - but nothing violent. We don't yell in our house, so we definitely don't want her being exposed to it on TV right now.
