WWYD - Garage (CP)

We recently switched DS to his big-boy car seat (aka not the infant carrier), and if he's fallen asleep in the car, he ALWAYS wakes up when I take him out.  So if we're not in any great hurry and the weather is nice, sometimes we'll just hang out in the car for a while so he can snooze.  I stay in the car, crack the windows and read a book.

We don't have a garage, but I'm curious...

The scenario:  Your baby falls asleep in the car.  You arrive home and park in the garage.  The weather is nice, not too hot, not too cold.  Do you let your baby stay asleep in the car inside the garage while you get out and go inside the house?

Re: WWYD - Garage (CP)

  • I would and have stay in the garage with her. She never sleeps for long after the vehicle stops

  • I never leave her sleeping in the car and go sit in the house for any length of time.  I might bring stuff in, go to the bathroom, etc, but I usually sit in the car with her.

That said, I only let her sleep if it's a normal nap time for her.  If she falls asleep on the way home from daycare, I let her sleep for 10-15 minutes max then get her up.  If it's a nap time and I just didn't get home in time, I'll move her to the crib and she will go back to sleep as long as she's been sleeping less than 15 minutes.

  • That's what my parents did with me.  They'd leave the car door open and they'd leave the door between the house and the garage open.

I'm not sure I'd do it for any length of time (maybe just to bring in groceries), but DS tends to wake up when the car stops.

  • I'd sit in the car with him, or leave him just to bring in groceries, but I don't think I'd leave him in the garage. (That said, we don't have a garage.) He stays asleep about 60% of the time getting him out of his car seat.

  • I voted other - because while I would do this, I would only let her sleep in the garage if I stayed with her.
That way I would know if the air was getting too hot/cold/stagnate and she was safe.

EDIT:  I guess if we were coming home from the grocery store and had items that needed to be refrigerated/frozen, I would probably feel safe to get those inside while she slept.  Our kitchen (as I imagine most are) is right by the garage door.  However, if I've already done all that moving around, I would probably just grab my daughter next and head inside.
But if there were no groceries, sure; I'd let her nap in the car.

  • Like the others, I'd get stuff carried in from the car and/or do some work in the garage.  I'd also make sure that the garage door was shut!!  IMO, not much difference between carrying LO in and setting them down either in the carseat, pnp, etc. than leaving them in the seat while carrying stuff in KWIM..

  • I voted 'Other'.  When he was younger, and would fall asleep in the stroller during walks, I would leave the stroller in the garage and keep the door to the house & garage open.  Sometimes I would sit out there with him until he woke up.  Now it is not really an issue, he usually always wakes up when the car stops or our dog starts freaking out when we get home.  If he were to stay asleep, and we'd park in the garage, I would be comfortable leaving him in there for only a few minutes as i brought other stuff in.

  • I don't think I'd leave either of my girls alone in the garage for a significant amount of time. I might leave them in there to bring in the groceries or to run to the bathroom. I'm not sure why, but the idea just makes me uncomfortable. I think I'm afraid I wouldn't hear them when they woke up. I've always been pretty successful at transitioning a sleeping child from the car seat to the bed, so this hasn't ever been an issue for me.

  • Our garage is connected to our house and is heated.  I leave the door to the house open, leave the car doors open and close the garage door (most of the time).  I usually only leave him in there while I carry in groceries and put them away, once in a while I will let him nap for a little longer if he really needs it but I go out there every 5 minutes.
  • We don't have a garage, but if we did, I'd only leave her long enough to bring in my groceries or shopping bags.  LO normally wakes up when the car stops moving though.
