Crossfit?

Just learned about crossfit, and I wanted to know if anyone has tried or is doing this. Has it worked? How often do you workout? Just have some questions and wanted to chat with any other mommies that are doing this!

Re: Crossfit?

  • Feel free to pm me. Crossfit isn't for everyone but I found it to be amazing! The workouts kick your butt, and if you a competitive you will push yourself much harder than taking classes, etc. It's a lot of money, but IMO worth every penny. I'm not currently doing crossfit this far in my pregnancy, but hope to once I have the baby. After having DS and losing some weight I hit a dead end and the scale wasn't budging. Within 10 days of crossfit 6 sessions and following paleo I lost 12lbs. I went 34 times a week and felt like that was perfect for me, my schedule wouldn't allow more time anyway. I felt like a new person, so much energy and all around strength. Most crossfit place allow you a free trial class... I say go for it, you'll know right away if it's for you. GL!

  • if you are pregnant check out crossfitmom.com most of them are workouts you can do at home! I LOVED it and you can scale beginner, intermediate or advanced.

if you are NOT preggo at the moment then I totally recommend crossfit.  I love it.  I dont go to the gym, I log onto crossfit.com and check out the WOD.  If it is something like rope climbs that i dont have the equiptment to do then i'll do a different workout that day (12 min interval running, insanity dvd, elliptical)

  • I've been crossfitting for 2 years, and am still crossfitting, now in my 36th week of pregnancy.

I'm the healthiest and strongest I have ever been. Crossfit isn't all about getting skinny or dropping weight - its really about becoming fit and able to conquer whatever task is ahead of you. It can be expensive, but IMHO it's totally worth it!

  • LOVE crossfit!  I have been doing it for about 4 years now.  I kept up at my gym till I was 37 weeks pregnant.  I love that it is all scale-able, not boring and gets me to push myself.  I got the ok to return last week at my 6 week follow up, it felt awesome to get back to it.

  • Yes!  I've been doing it for over a year and love it.  I go 3-5 times per week, whenever I have somewhere for DD to be like daycare or grandma's. My husband actually opened his own gym last November after doing it for a year so luckily it's "free" for me (you know, aside from the whole capital investment/no-income-while-repaying-debt-for-several-years part).  It can be pricey but once you start, you understand how much value it has over traditional $10/month globo gyms or doing anything on your own.  Different custom workout everyday, constantly varied for maximum results, fairly short duration since it's higher intensity.  Like personal training for a fraction of the cost.  As PP said, the group atmosphere really pushes you (in a good way) and you feel so accomplished doing olympic weight lifting and gymnastics moves you've never considered before.

Every gym has a different feel so if there are a few in your town, ask around and check out multiple boxes.  Some focus more on scaling and proper technique whereas others just kind of turn you loose and have all fire-breathing superstars that may intimidate you.  Making changes to a paleo diet will also really get you results.  My body is so much stronger, more defined, and, also a plus for a former klutz, more coordinated.

I will also definitely keep CFing through my next pregnancy and it's great to hear you other awesome ladies going into your 9th month with it!  We've had a few strong mommas at our gym who rock.

  • Thank you all for your advice. Unfortunately, i am locked into a gym contract that does not offer crossfit but i am able to get to a cardio class about 2 times a week. However, that is not enough for me to reach my goals. I am curious to the ladies that do the WOD at home, do you find them just as effective as doing it at the gym or with equipment? I did my first WOD an could only get through 7 out of 10 sets. I am sure it takes time to build up to it, and I am sure feeling it today!

The group atmosphere does push you further, the same way you would run faster for a 5K race than practicing on your own.  It's also nice to have some of the other equipment at the box versus just using body weight or gym equipment.  So no I don't think it's quite as effective but that doesn't mean it isn't still a great way to start.  And once you finish your contract, you'll be in a better position to start at a box and be familiar with the concepts.

No worries on only getting 7 rounds!  This comes back to scaling.  The WODs you'll see on the mainpage are "RX" or the prescribed weight and reps.  Not everyone is at the "elite" level yet, especially if you're just starting.  We always have L1, L2, and L3 (scaling levels, 1 beginner to 3 just shy of RX) in our box in addition to the RX which may be fewer rounds, fewer reps, or just a lower weight.  Pick a goal to challenge yourself but make it achievable.  Most WODs are in the 10-20 min range and your goal should be to finish around that time while keeping that high intensity.  If it takes you 35 min to do a WOD at the RX weight/reps because you have to keep taking breaks, then you're not really benefitting as much as you would from scaling it down and staying strong and quick the whole time.  Keep going!
