PC: 'Baby on Board' signs for car

You know those yellow signs that people hang in the car window that say 'Baby on Board'? Do you (or did you ever) have one of these? If so, why?
I see them regularly, but today there was a car that had one and for some reason it annoyed me. There was a car seat in the back that had no child in it. The driver was a guy. So obviously there was no baby on board. But what's the purpose of the sign to begin with?

LOL! I don't blame you, that's horrible.
We got a "Princess on Board" with the Disney Princesses on it at a sprinkle gift. I will not be putting it on my car.
I guess the purpose it to make other drivers around you on the road more cautious, but I am doubtful of their effectiveness.
I had one when DS was really little, but it it fell off and I threw it away. Mostly, it was just to make me feel better about the tailgaters, like I was actually sending them some sort of message they might read (ha!) I swear people drive about an inch from your car bumper around here. What I really want to post in my window is a sign that says "Back the f*** off!", but you know, I work at a school...
I've said in the past I think all cars should have spikes on the back to intimidate those who fail to stop before they are an inch from you.
haha. I was just about to say how fabulous those are! Please put this on your car and drive around with it forever.
I'm actually going make one that says "road rage on board". That'll make bishes think twice before they get up on my grill.

I've been skeptical of their effectiveness too.
I"m also skeptical of the Slow Children road signs. If you drive by that sign a lot and happen to never see children there, you learn to ignore it and it loses it's effectiveness.

There were these asswipes by my mom's house that had one of these. I always wanted to run it down on principle. If your children are not old/mature enough to be mindful of cars they should not be playing in or near the street.
As for the baby on board signs, I think they're tacky. And people with them always seem to drive like morons- but you better not hit them! They's got a baby.

I've always been told it's not a good idea to post signs, stickers, vanity plates, etc. that ID a car as having women or children in them because it makes you a more attractive target to criminals.
Not sure how much that plays out in real life, but I'm wary enough that I would avoid using these signs anyway.
It's how the killer in Dexter season 4 got one of his victims!
