August 2011 Moms

Hi, new here.

Hi everyone. I have an August '11 baby boy and he recently stopped sleeping through the night. He is teething like crazy right now and just had one of his one year molars pop through. I have been giving him tylenol and teething tablets, but they don't seem to be helping. He wakes up every other hour at night and is so upset. Any advice to help him sleep through the night?

Re: Hi, new here.

  • Hi and welcome aboard!

This is probably (hopefully!) just a phase your LO is going through, so hopefully he grows out of it soon. Do you know if he's on the cusp of mastering a new skill? I have read that "a baby who used to sleep all night may go back to their night-owl habits when they are mastering a new skill. Many a parent has found their baby practicing a new skill like sitting or pulling up in their crib in the middle of the night." (https://bodyandhealth.canada.com/channel_section_details.asp?text_id=5327&channel_id=2062&relation_id=84077) So maybe that's what's going on?

Are you opposed to CIO? Might be worth giving a try?

Good luck and let us know how things go!

  • Welcome! Just like anything else this will pass. I agree with Mha. Hang in there.
  • Welcome! Has anything else chenged in your world?  Did you move? get a new pet? New hours at work? Could be anything.  I know when we moved it turned our 12 hr a night sleeper into an up every few hours.

We let her CIO for a few nights and with in 2-3 nights she was back on her sleep game.  If it is just teeth then hurry up and wait.  Trust your gut.  If it's anything else you'll know.

    Hope to see you again!

  • We did move recently, but he was sleeping well when we first got here. I just feel horrible for him, and he is always fussy and tired. I don't like CIO, I would rather be up with him and helping him.

Thanks everyone for your help! Hopefully it will pass.

Also, He doesn't walk yet, but he is working hard on it, so maybe that is his new skill he is trying to master:)

Welcome!  It might still be from the move.  Maybe he is having dreams of his old house and wakes up confused a little?  My DS goes through phases of sleeping all night to waking every hour.  I just keeping telling myself "just hang in there.... once he is a teen he will sleep til noon and you will have peacfeful nights again." LOL Good luck with your son!!

    Hello and welcome!

I agree with others that it is probably a phase.  Hang in there, once he learns to walk, you might get lucky and get a few days where all he wants to do is sleep.  Then maybe you can get some rest, yourself!  Good luck!

  • Well I took him to the ped 2 days ago and had him put back on his reflux meds, and he has been sleeping better the past two nights. Last night he went to sleep at 745, woke up at 1030 to nurse, then slept from 1045-500. He has been up since, but that is a lot better than being up all night.

    Thanks everyone for your advice.

Glad to hear it - I hope his sleep keeps on improving :)

  • Thanks!

He didn't sleep at all last night, but it wasn't his fault. He went to bed great, then there was a really loud noise outside that startled him. (This was at like 1030) then he was up the rest of the night:/ He just laid down for a nap, so I am resting right now.
