I am running out of ideas!

I am having a harder time now keeping DD entertained now that she is more active and curious. We do tummy time, jolly jumper, play on play mat, play with some toys, sing songs, stories, walks.... normal stuff. But she is getting sick of it much quicker and I am running out of ideas fast! That used to fill the day and now by around this time she is having a melt down unless I am juggling chairs and singing.

I will also add, as of late she is a fan of a meltdown mid walk or while in a public place. I am not sure why but our outings are much shorter cause she wont settle down until she gets home.

What are some ways your play with and entertain your babies that I could throw in the mix? My creativity is spent!

  • What about making faces in the mirror, looking out the window (my guy is fascinated with glass that he can't put his hand through), dance parties (he loves when I sing and twirl him in circles, or just watching me dance like a nutcase- his favourite songs are What Makes You Beautiful and anything by LMFAO), playing airplane (lie on your back with baby on your shins and make him 'fly'), read the newspaper, or just walking around looking at stuff? We do that last one a lot. We walk around a room and I point things out, where they're made, what they're used for, etc etc. We also play with an abacus and a bead maze, and his hand eye coordination has improved so much.

  • Could you be overstimulating her? Just a thought.

  • I can definitely identify with the mid-walk meltdown. It has derailed my exercise plan more than once! I can't figure it out since he enjoys being outside so much.

As far as activities, DS likes to sit in his high chair and will entertain himself by trying to stuff toys in his mouth. This usually buys me about 15 minutes in the morning to get a bite to eat and wash a dish or two. I also like to use him as a weight to do some simple exercises, which he thinks is funny. I use him to do squats, fanny-raises (I think they're actually called tables?), crunches, airplanes, and air-pushups. Oddly enough, he also likes to watch me do laundry if I prop him up on his boppy. I talk to him about what I'm folding, and he just absorbs it like it's church. lol

  • Overstimulation is my thought too. Babies can actually be easily overstimulated and really dont need to be constantly entertained at 4 months old (or any age, really). At this age everything is new, fascinating, and stimulating. Playing with baby is fun, but you should also be able to put LO down and have them be fine, for both their sake and yours.

FWIW, DS2 likes his jolly jumper and play mat. I also put him in the boppy with tray and put something on the tray for him to try and grab. Otherwise I wear him or carry him around and go about my regular duties, in or outside the home.  And since I have 2 other LOs to worry about/provide for/chase/play with, DS2 doesnt get a ton of one on one entertainment with me during the day.

  • sometimes I just put him in the ergo and walk around doing household chores. He gets really entertained by just seeing things at my eye level.

  • Same with us! She's in this tough stage between being really interested and wanting to do more, but not being able to do too much for herself yet... I think she'll be way happier when she can sit unsupported and use her hands better.

It doesn't help that we live in my parents' cluttered house, and don't have enough room to put out half of her stuff/toys :(

  • For sure not over stimulation at home. However I cant totally see this being the case away from home.

I agree shes in that stage where she wants to do things she cant yet. I will try wearing her more! Thanks for your ideas!

This is the case for my DS too. He wants to sit up so badly, but isn't there yet, and we don't have a activity jumper yet, so I spend most of my day letting him hold onto my fingers while he practices his balance for sitting. He gets so mad when he also can't get his hands to do what he wants. Plus he gets bored quickly, so I totally understand the chair juggling while bouncing on a ball and holding a cake up on a rake lol

I bet in a few weeks they have major baby break throughs and we start posting that we miss our little babies who used to love to be held! Lol. Until then I guess I will keep doing cartwheels and singing Christmas carols.

Im going to try the sitting practice!
