She is finally eating!

I have been feeding Layla once a day since she was 6 months old....I tried homemade purees of sweet potatoes, applesauce, mashed avocado and bananas.  She would take maybe 2 bites and fight me on everything.  Finally a month ago, I just started giving her little bites of everything that I eat.  And she has finally started eating!!  She eats right off of my fork.  She has tried salmon, chicken, turkey, pasta, zucchini, octopus, mushrooms, cheese, beans, edamame, peas, tzaziki sauce, hummus, even truffles!!  She loves mushrooms.  I feed her exactly what I am eating, spices and all and she loves it.  The only thing she hates is scrambled eggs and bananas.  I also think she just really hates purees.  It must be a texture thing.  She will eat applesauce but that is it.

At her 9 month appointment last week she has fallen behind weight wise though.  She is now at the 25% for height and weight...just 16lbs 11 oz.  The doctor says I need to feed her 3 times a day now, and limiting her bottles to 24 oz. so I have been feeding her at every meal.  I am having trouble limiting her bottles because she still wakes up twice a night for a bottle even when I feed her solids and a 6 oz bottle right before bed.  So she gets about 18 oz at night and at least 3 bottles during the day.

She never eats more than 2-3 tablespooons of food, if that.  How much solid food are your babies eating?  I don't know how to get her to eat more...she stops when she is full.

Edit:  She still has no teeth at all.

My ds yells and gets so mad if I'm eating and don't share my food with him. I feed him solids three times a day and usually about 1/4 cup each feeding. Then he gets fruit pure or yogurt as a snack once a day and I bf him in between and at night so maybe another 4 5 times a day. So far the only thing he didn't like was cottage cheese which I don't blame him, yuck! but he loves everything else. I stopped pureeing his proteins and instead just break them up in little pieces. We just had our 9 month appt and he is just over 19 lbs. He's in the 50 of weight and 75 for height, tall and lean : The dr said I could give him anything I want accept honey as long as its soft nothing he needs molars to crunch up.

  • Matthew will eat some cereal in the morning or maybe yogurt. Sometimes just a couple of tablespoons, sometimes more. I usually send 2 purees with him to daycare. Sometimes he gets the smaller stage 1 size and sometimes the bigger stage 2 size package, just depends on what I have. Sometimes he gets the homemade stuff (again, depending on what I have). I have actually increased the ounces in his bottles a little bit because he was sick and didn't eat for 4 days. So he gets up to 7 oz in his bottles at daycare. Usually he will eat 7-8 oz in the morning after he wakes up, 3 bottles at daycare, then one before bed. So he's probably still getting over 30 oz of formula a day. It seems like he has been wanting to eat more solids lately though as well so I'm trying to increase that, but he still gets mostly purees and yogurt, basically because I'm afraid he'll choke on anything else, although he does eat puffs, mum mum crackers, and pieces of banana (and some other things we have tried). We go for our 9 month appt a week from today. He was supposed to go 2 weeks ago but was really sick and we had to cancel. He was only 17 lbs 9 oz when he was weighed at his sick visit. He also just got his two bottom teeth within the last 2-3 weeks.

It's wonderful that Layla loves so many foods!!

  • We do about 4oz cereal and fruit for breakfast, 3-4 oz puree at lunch, and 2-3 oz of puree or yogurt and fruit for dinner.

We also do puffs for snacks.

My daughter only has one tooth right now and she loves her puffs, pieces of banana and avocado. I just cut them into smaller pieces and spread them out on her tray.

  • DS isn't formula fed, but I admit I'm a bit put off by your Dr telling you to limit the formula intake, especially since LO is a little below average on weight.  My understanding is that formula (or breastmilk) is supposed to stay the main source of nutrition until age 1.  Maybe I'm off base because I'm breastfeeding and don't know how much my DS eats, but IMHO I'd get a second opinion about limiting formula in this situation.

I was told "food before 1 is just for fun".  From the sounds of it, your DD is doing great eating table foods, and it shouldn't matter that she's only sampling.  The point of solids at this age is to give them experience eating different textures, not making sure they get high quantity.  That's what the baby food nutritionist said in a seminar anyway.  From what I hear, she's doing great, especially with no teeth.

  • I'm concerned about the limit on bottles as well. Rosemary gets either breast milk or formula in bottles and the doctor said she needed a minimum of 24 ounces per day until 1.

Like Layla, Ro will eat when she feels like it and HATES purees. She's great at feeding herself - but it has to be something tasty. If it's on my plate instead of her tray it's especially delicious. I'd offer her food as often as you can, but I would be hesitant to restrict her formula, especially if she's dropped percentiles.
