C-sections

swelling after a c-section

Hi I was wondering if anyone who has had a c-section had major swelling in legs and ankles? My ob nurse said she thinks it is just the shift of fluid in body but I am really scared. I see my dr. again friday morning Has anyone had this before?

Re: swelling after a c-section

  • Yes, I looked huge when I came home. In fact I had so much swelling I actually came home weighing more than I did when I went in to have our son. It took a good two weeks to start to go away and then the weight just fell off. Hope you are doing ok and that it's normal swelling. Try to go light on things that could increase it, like salt, etc.

  • My feet and ankles were SO swollen when I was discharged. I had pre-e so I was used to super swollen feet but this was ridiculous. I kept my feet up a ton in the hospital. The swelling went down in about a week or so.

  • Yep. My legs down to my feet were completely swollen.. I had cankles the swelling was so bad. It went away after a couple days. I had my feet elevated in my bed and that seemed to help a bit and make it go down faster.

This. It was really painful. I didn't have any swelling in my legs or feet while pregnant, just after delivery. Elevating my feet helped a ton. It was gone sometime late in that 2nd week.

  • Yes, it was beyond horrible to a point that it may be a major decision point whether or not to have more kids.  I just don't think I can deal with being that swollen again.  It took about a month for the swelling to start improving.  Hugs to you.

  • Yup, my feet and legs were more swollen after DS was born than before.  It took about 2 weeks for it to all go away.  My dr said it was from all the fluids that they pumped into me in preparation for the surgery.  It's something that I'm not looking forward to this time, but isn't the end of the world either.  I'm hoping that it will be less because it's a planned c/s instead of an emergency one.

exactly this.  Avoid salt, drink lots of water. I was so upset at how big my feet were and thought that they would never go back to normal...they did but it took about 2 weeks.

This.  I was very surprised because I only had some minor swelling the last couple of weeks of my pregnancy.  The swelling must have been gone by 1w6d because I wore normal shoes for DS's baptism.

  • Yes, my feet and ankles were really swollen after my c-section 3 weeks ago. My OB was concerned about blood clots and had me go to a vascular dr. to do an U/S on my legs to rule them out.

I'm now over 3 weeks PP and my swelling is almost all gone........

  • I gained 11 lbs after my c-section! My legs looked like big, fat tubes. We went back two days after we were released because I was quite worried about it. They said it was just normal fluid retention because of the IV (I had been on an IV for three days). It took quite awhile for it to go down. For months afterwards, when I got up, I had this weird sensation like something was trickling down my legs.

  • I didn't have a c-section but I did have swelling during and after pregnancy - my doc recommended Preggers compression stockings.  I was hesitant at first - my sister had to wear those yucky ones at the hospital after her c-section - but then I got them and they are wonderful.  I still wear them :)  You should ask your doc.
  • Oh yes! I had Shrek feet.  My face looked like a balloon.  It was pretty ugly.  It went away about 3-4 days after I got home.  I didn't have to do anything to get rid of it.  You can elevate your feet, apply ice on it, drink lots of fluids, it should help the swelling go down.

  • Yep.  Massive swelling for me.  I actually did not get one stretch mark during pregnancy but got them all over my hips and thighs due to post cs swelling.

  • Great question, thanks for asking because I'm headed towards two weeks out from my c section and was wondering the same exact thing.  I was told two weeks by a nurse before I left but have noticed fluid/swelling going down in my hands/stomach/thighs but still noticeable fluid/swelling in my calves and feet.

  • Yes, my legs/ankles were huge & that discomfort bothered me more than the incision. My legs were tree trunks & I wore slippers for a long time. I still had some swelling at my 6 week follow-up appointment.  I'm hoping it won't happen that way again this time, but who knows!
