white furniture

The room that will be our LO's nursery currently is (and will stay) light gray with white trim. I'm debating what color/finish the furniture should be.

I've ruled out the light wood finishes, as that doesn't seem to match. I'm now debating between dark wood and white. I'm worried that dark wood will make this small room feel even smaller. But then I worry that white furniture will show nicks and scratches more. We had white furniture in our living room and my DH has done a number on it to the point I'm leery of ever getting white stuff again!

For the STM+ moms, what has your experience been with white furniture (crib, dresser/changing table)? Was this an issue?

Re: white furniture

  • I think white furniture would look fantastic with your colour scheme but I am bias.  We have white nursery furniture and it doesn't show scatches.  In fact, I asked that very question in the store and they said dark wood is more likely to show scratches as the scratches show up white.

We were team green and the other thing I considered with white furniture was whether it was gender neutral.  I think for babies and toddlers it is but for an older boy maybe not.  We ended up splurging on a white hutch and since we had a girl she will have it in her room for a long time.  Had we had a boy, I probably would have done his "big boy" room with brown furniture and saved the white furniture for baby number 2.

  • I'd say go white! From what I'm envisioning, white would look best. We have a light blue room with white trim and went with all white furniture, although the crib does have white AND dark brown. All of our furniture is Pottery Barn and so far so good - no scratches. We actually got the crib used, but it was in great condition. Keep in mind that our LO has only been in his room for 4 months, but everything still looks great.

  • We have a white crib and dresser in DS's room and they are holding up great. We have the Ikea Hemnes 3 drawer dresser which I LOVE. We use it as a changing table too.

This. We also have an iKEA crib and no problem with scratches. I purposely tried to scratch the floor model and no scratches on the ikea stuff.

  • Our nursery is also gray and white, and we went with white furniture. I think it makes it feel much bigger and brighter.

  • We bought all white nursery furniture for our first and it has held up through 2 kids and 4 (!!!) moves and looks great and is ready to set up for #3! I say with that color scheme you definitely want white furniture!

  • I say go with the white furniture! We have white furniture for DS and we loved it. No issues at all. Now we will be using it in new babies room and the walls are painted gray as well. I can't wait. It is going to look fantastic.

  • We have a gray nursery with white trim and white nursery furniture.  I like it.  It has only been used for 9 months but shows no nicks or scratches.

  • We did a combination!  White change table and Espresso color crib and glider.  I felt like it worked really well and created a nice look.  Our nursery had grey walls as well.  There has been no issues with the white change table and it's 32 years old now (custom made by my grandpa when I was born) so we had painted it ourselves just a couple of coats of latex paint, no laquer or anything.  I did notice that there are a couple of scratches on our dark crib though.  I think someone's belt buckle might habe been the culprit.

  • I love white furniture especially in a grey room. We went with white for DD and we haven't had any problems with scratches. The one time I got a black scratch on one of the legs of the crib (I think the vaccuum cleaner was the culprit) it easily came off with the mister clean magic eraser.

  • Ditto many pp. We have grey walls with white trim and our nursery furniture is white. To date it has no scratches/marks. Using it for #2 as well!
