Pregnant after 35

Weight frustration

Is anyone else frustrated with their weight gain? I know in the big scheme of thing it is important to have a healthy baby but I really wanted to keep my weight gain down this pregnancy. With my first child I gained 3035 lbs. I lost all but 10 of those when I became pregnant with this child now after only13 weeks I have gained another 9. Which is way too much for the first trimester I know my problem is inactivity with dh working nights and dd being a handful to get to bed I have no time to exercise. I feel aweful none of my may clothes fit yet nor my regular clothes. I ordered a treadmill a few weeks back but it won't be delivered till next month. I need inspiration.
My question is whose working out and what are you doing?

During the first tri - my workout consisted of holding furniture down (my couch, my bed, etc).  I just couldn't find the energy to do anything.  I would go on a walk a couple times a week from the prodding of my DH, but it was a sssllllllooooooowwww walk - like a 30 minute mile kind of walk.

This was me during the 1st tri.  Slow walks around the block was all I really could do since I was sooo tired! Now that I'm in my 2nd tri and definitely have more energy, I'm back in the gym on the treadmill and just started doing prenatal yoga.  My doctor doesn't want me to gain more than 15 lbs since I'm already overweight so I'm also really trying to watch what I eat and not give in too much to my cravings.

  • I gain more in my 1st tri then slow down in 2nd and then gain more again in 3rd because I only want ice cream and cake. Just do the best you can. If you are overweight though don't forgot your doctor is being more strict about the weight gain for your own safety.
  • I have ordered a treadmill so my plan was to walk on that for 3060 minutes a day. But I was also thinking if ordering some DVDs to workout with I know if I get anything dance my daughter will join in. Suggestions for DVDs?
  • I have two dogs. One of them is a Border Collie mix and simply will not survive without an hour-long walk every day. I used to actually walk her an hour in the morning and ANOTHER hour in the afternoon, but now most days I just throw a tennis ball in the backyard for her in the PM instead. I can walk an hour, but two hours is too much for me right now.

  • My suggestion, and this has worked for me for exercise all thoughout this pregnancy, is to use what you have. If your girl is energetic, take her somewhere to run/walk around for a bit. It'll give you exercise and hopefully also wear her out some to make bedtime a bit easier. Smile

  • This is my second, and with both, I have gained around 10 lbs in the first trimester.  First time, I totally get it because I was exhausted and didn't work out.  This time, I did two triathlons and a half marathon, so I was definitely working out!  However, last pregnancy, I only gained around 18-20 pounds total, and in the last 5 weeks, I've only gained 1 pound.  So, I've decided that my body just like to "bulk" up in the first trimester.  Big Smile  I just know to be careful from this point forward, and it worked out fine last time.

  • I know I have gained a couple pounds recently and I'm not happy about it.  I'm starting out overweight and I didn't want to gain at all for awhile.  The problem is that I feel crappy and can only seem to eat badly because healthy food is still gross to me.  I also can't muster up energy for exercise.  I am really hoping for that blissful second tri I hear about.  I have not advice but know that you are not the only one.  My plan is to start at least doing alot of walking soon.  I have an elliptical so I hope to get back on it soon too.  I hear it gets better so even though you gained alot quickly you should be able to slow that down in second tri.

  • I forced myself to keep going to the gym during first tri, I always felt better afterwards. I did light weight lifting circuit training, 30 mins, then elliptical, 30 minutes. I feel great in the gym if I can just make myself get there after working!

  • I have fibro and arthritis, so over the past 6 years, I've gone from being a national touring rugby player to being a lump on the couch. I'm lucky if I can stand walking the dog for 45 minutes. However, I work 3-4 twelve-hour shifts where I'm pretty much on my feet for all but maybe an hour of the twelve. And I'm manipulating 350-550 lb sedated people. I figure that's my workout! LOL

For me, the key is absolutely watching what I eat. I have lost 7 pounds so far this trimester-- and I bet it would be more except for the fact that my boobs have gotten larger and denser and I'm clearly doing something around my middle because my body shape is changing but I still fit into my clothes.

Before anyone gets mad at me, though, I'd like to say that I'm starting at a higher weight and my doc said that it's common for overweight women to lose weight in their pregnancy (and still be healthy) if they watch what they eat.

I've been pretty good so far, curbing cravings and watching my portions. Until this morning when I ate a delicious breakfast bagel sandwich from my local organic market, a croissant, and a pain au chocolat. I think I'm going to have to skip lunch or eat only celery! LOL

I think just do what you can. I liked the suggestion of going for a walk with your daughter-- my sister used to do that when she was pregnant with her 2nd and it helped her a lot.
