July 2011 Moms

Am I the only crazy mother

Who refers to herself in the third person while speaking to LO?

ex. Sit back so Mommy can strap you in your chair.

Ex. Mommy's cooking dinner right now

I do it every single time. I have never done this before and don't do it with anyone else.

Re: Am I the only crazy mother

  • I do it all the time!

It's also a habit from work. When it's my day to work with the really little kids it's a lot of, "Mrs. Dairy needs you listening. Mrs. Dairy needs you to sit. etc. etc."

I don't do it with anyone older than 5 however. ;)

  • It's totally normal with small kids, I dont know why we do it though. I guess it's to help kids learn language? And they don;t understand pronouns yet

  • My sister has a 4.5yo and maybe a year ago (?) they were at the pedi and were told to STOP doing this b/c my niece was referring to herself in the third person all the time.  Haha!  My sister said it was SO HARD to stop.  AND she has a 2.5yo so she had to refer to herself as Mommy to HER but not to the 4.5yo.  Tricky!

  • Add me to the list of those who do it.
  • I do it once in a while but try tokeep it to a minimum, because I noticed a while ago that my sister was STILL talking that way to her girls, who are 8 and 10!! Lol and I find it annoying when I hear other people do it. But I say it at certain times, like to say "mama loves you."

My niece (my sister's 10 yr old) did refer to herself in the third person when she started talking! It was the funniest thing. "She wanna go outside. She like her new car seat."

  • I do too. Like other posters said, I started doing this to teach him what to call me. Now that he knows that I am Mama, I haven't stopped.
