Ergo insert or ring sling for a newborn/infant

We already own an Ergo, so I'm debating getting either the infant insert or buying a good ring sling for baby #3.

I have a Moby too. DD2 hated it. Pretty much no matter what I did, she'd last 5 minutes before she started fussing. She loved the Ergo though. Baby will be born in late March, so maybe it will work better.

I'd still like to get a carrier that's easier to use, especially one that's easy to nurse in.

Would you go with a ring sling or just buy the Ergo infant insert?

  • I would get the insert... DS hated the ring sling (I had a maya wrap) and I could never get comfortable wearing it either. We used mostly the baby ktan nursing infancy though- its a soft wrap and was magic for DS- he'd fall asleep immediately!

  • Both?  I think a ring sling is fantastic to have - great for quick carries, easier to nurse in, you'll use it forever - Sleeping Baby Productions has good ones starting at $30.  The ergo insert is awkward IMO but since you do already have an ergo, picking one up isn't a bad idea.  You can also use a folded blanket to recreate the insert (unless you are talking a tiny baby) - the purpose of the insert is to make the carrier fit baby snuggly to keep baby from slumping.
  • I purchased the infant insert and made a sling for my newest addition.  So far I have gotten more use out of the ring sling than out of the infant insert with the Ergo.  It has only been a week though.  Both have things that I like about them that come in handy for different needs.   I like the Ergo with insert when at the store, but like that I can just throw on the sling at home to get some extra support in carrying my little one.  If you can do both, go for it.

  • I agree with PP, having both expands your options. The infant insert is useful and DH liked to wear her in that alot, plus, it kind of muffles their ears for sleeping. :) But as soon as DD became less sleepy and more awake she was totally over it and the sling ended up being what she liked better. She really enjoys the hip carries.

  • I'm thinking now that I won't be able to use the Ergo for a couple months since I'll be recovering from a c/s. I'm pretty sure the belt part goes right across my incision scar. By 2 months, I should have a 13-14 lb baby, so I probably won't need it.

  • For our third DD I finally got the infant insert (previously I just used slings/moby wrap until they were big enough for the Ergo).  However, I had a June baby, and it was just too hot to have her in there very long...........so went back to the moby most days.  So for me, it wasn't really worth it, although I did end up starting to use the Ergo when she was 2 months, just froggy legged in it (she was a big baby though, and only now do I feel like she actually fits in it comfortably without the froggy style sitting).
