Lifting...

So, does anyone know what is a safe amount to lift and why one shouldn't lift anything too heavy? My mom is one of the few who 'knows' and she was helping around my house the other day and about freaked out when I tried to lift a 15lb box. I am 5'10, in shape, and young, and before pg, I could easily help my hubby lift car engines, etc. So, this is a HUGE adjustment for me! ;) Anyhow, just curious! Thanks for the advice, in advance!

Re: Lifting...

  • It's closer to 30 pounds that becomes unsafe but even then, if you're used to lifting things that size, it's still probably ok.  I'm tiny - 4'10 and I carry my 25 pound son all over.

    ^^ Absolutely ^^

not to mention.  Weight restrictions are not because it is a danger to your growing baby.   They are suggested because of our loosening tendons.   Just listen to your own body.

  • With my first I was told 25 lbs. I actually stuck to it. There is no way I will be able to this time though with a clingy 25 lb toddler.

  • My DD is 30lbs and I lift her. I do try to limit picking her up since I have a history of m/cs and a previous c/s. But I still would guess I pick her up at least 10 times a day on average!

  • I talked to my OB about this a couple days ago because I work at a stable and have to lift 40lb buckets of water and hay bales all day long, in addition to a bunch of other strenuous stuff like shoveling, sweeping, dumping full wheelbarrows, etc.

He said if my body is used to it, I could continue it as long as I felt comfortable doing it; meaning I would probably get uncomfortable trying to do these things with a big belly. I plan on working until about 14 to 16w.

But I also have a 30lb daughter who I don't plan to stop picking up.

As far as why, the only worry is straining muscles because your center of gravity is thrown off. There used to be rumors of heavy lifting causing placental abruption, but apparently that's extremely unlikely and lifting is really nothing to worry about.

  • I don't think I could one day without lifting something heavy...I think it is just a part of life...Just don't go crazy with it!

I nanny for a 6 month old boy who is about this size.  I can handle it, but when we go to the library (he also has a 3yo sister) with him in the car seat it's hard to carry, and the stroller they have doesn't fit in my car.

  • I am only 5'1" but my 2 year old is 36lbs and I carry him all the time. However, I am used to carrying him all over the place.

  • My son is so fat *facepalm* Like he really is lol.

I love his chunky self, but really when he can walk, that's what he will be doing because I just don't have the upper body strength for it lol.

  • Thank you ladies, so much! I feel a little silly, but I am glad I asked!! :)

We live in the country with an abundance of chores, so I am glad I will not have to be out of commission, the entire 9 months!

I appreciate the advice and it sound like many of you have adorable children, whom keep you hopping!  :)
