Working Moms - What is your job?

Is it conducive to having kids?

I do medical device sales, covering hospitals in AZ and Las Vegas. In some ways it's great because I make my own schedule, but the travel can be pretty intense sometimes. I'm sitting in the airport as I type ;)

  • I am a program coordinator for a statewide research and outreach program. It is very much a normal office job. My travel is somewhat limited (though it could probably be more if I wanted it to; my boss travels a lot) so it's pretty conducive to having children!

  • I'm a veterinarian. The job itself is kid-friendly for the most part (except sometime issues w/ emergency after hours stuff). However, I recently opened a new practice and I'm the only veterinarian....March-May/June is usually our busiest season...I'm due April 30. Timing kind of sucks, but I'm trusting it'll work out okay.

  • I'm a P&C Insurance Producer for two agencies.

    After I have the baby I plan to end one of my jobs and just work at the one agency. I'll be able to work from home often but still get out and see adults when I need a little break, I feel very lucky.

  • I am CSR for Canvas on Demand/Cafepress. There is only a handful of people here that are parents, but the hours are flexible. If you are sick one day you can come in another to make up for it etc.

  • My hubs is a trainer in medical devices with about 30 travel.

    I'm a teacher so I have a regular schedule and can make it work.

    I think it depends on what your DH does and whether or not you can emotionally handle being away.

    Are there openings in your field without as much traveling it with a smaller territory?

  • I'm a dentist.  So far, I haven't had too much trouble.  Although, I do think towards the end of pregnancy I'll have some issues.  But, I've already talked to the other two docs I work with and we've agreed to adjust the schedule so that my last month or so I will mostly do exams and some easy treatment.  (It's nice working with people who can be flexible).
  • Middle school teacher.  

    Work has been great so far...they've been really flexible with my doctor's appointments.  Good thing is baby is due towards the end of the school year...then, I'll have all summer to stay at home (and still get paid!).  :o)

  • 5th grade teacher. They are pretty flexible but I am trying not to push my luck! I have felt pretty crappy with m/s and puking before work, but I know it could be worse and I want to save my days for when I really feel awful. I am thrilled about being due the last week of school and having 11 weeks home with my baby while being paid!!

  • I'm a project manager on the corporate side of a bank -- since we're global, I operate a lot via conference calls and Live Meetings and I can do my job at home if needed.  Since my first was born, I only needed to travel once, and that was just for 1 week.  My managers are pretty flexible when I need to take time off, work from home, or just stay close to home.

  • I work in public health policy and recently switched to a MUCH lower paying PT job in a related field. I can work no problem through the pregnancy it just might not make sense for me financially to continue to work there as pay net pay after work will not be enough to justify the time away from the LO. Especially bc I had a bad day at work involving a health care provider talking to me like I was a teenager over some made up and illogical turf war between him and a female provider. Right now I'd love to quit because I didn't take a $40k pay cut to deal with this. I'm sure I'll be over it by next week but right now I am so annoyed.

  • I'm a full time fourth year PhD student in plant pollination biology. Having kids in grad school is typically frowned upon, but I am in a very supportive department and an even more supportive lab. My advisor had a daughter when she was in grad school and she said that even though it'll be really hard, it's the best time to have kids because your schedule is so flexible!

  • I'm a concierge for a luxury condo building.  I love my job and the people I work for.  They're very flexible with my schedule but I'm not sure how its going to work between myself, DH, and LO this May.  I might drop to part-time.  
  • I'm an executive assistant to the owners of a small family-owned company that is an hour drive from home, each way.  There are days I like it and others I hate it.  They claim to be flexible and supportive, but there are times where they really aren't.  

    My son had the flu last year and I stayed home with him for the day.  My boss made me come in for the afternoon, right when I also came down with the flu.  He also wouldn't let me take a day off to have my NT scan (among 2 other appointments) because he wanted me in the office while he was out of the country, so I had to reschedule 2 of the 3 appointments.  Some of those things have really gotten to me, but I try to let it roll off my back.  I need to stick around for the insurance coverage.  Once the baby comes I'll look at my options for finding another FT job closer to home, or one with more flexible hours.

  • I'm a professor at a mid-size regional university. My department touts that they are "family friendly" but after having DD1, I have realized I will have a lot of "mommy" perceptions to work against-especially when #2 arrives. What is great is the flexibility, I work 9-4 regularly because I can & need to but attending appointments or staying home with LO is no problem-as long as I'm not to be in the classroom (which is only 6 hrs a week). My summers are on my own schedule, so DD goes to daycare part time then. Unfortunately though, we have NO maternity policy/leave at all (outside of FMLA). Thankfully, this time I will be protected by FMLA as last time I wasnt, and DD was premature/NICU.

  • Physical therapist. Work doesnt know about the LO arriving in May yet, but my MD thinks Ill be able to work until delivery. We'll see. I do a lot of lifting so light duty may be in order at some point. DH works from home mostly and hopes to be a stay at home dad/flex with my schedule. We're hoping for no daycare and possibly someone one or two days a week in our home or theirs.

  • I am the admissions coordinator for an all male residential treatment center. We serve boys 5-20 years old who have primarily either been removed from their families because of severe abuse, psychiatric illness, or they have committed a crime. It is a very stressful job but extremely rewarding at the same time. It is suppose to be a 9-5 job, but I am often there late and on call in the evenings for emergencies. I told my staff and my coworkers who are in the same suite very early, obviously restraining a kid or breaking up a fight was not on the list of approved activities! Lol! My staff and coworkers have all been amazing! I am very nervous to tell my supervisor, I do not think it will go over well. My job has a daycare on campus, so at least LO will be close!

  • I am a partner in a financial advisory firm.  It's not super conducive to having kids, although the hours are pretty regular my days are long and the work is kind of intense.  But I have been there a long time (11 years) and that gives me bit more leeway.  It's a hard-working group, though.

  • I'm a high school teacher, and like some previous posters I'm super excited to have the summer off with my newborn while still getting paid. I also get 30 days paid maternity leave so I want to try and take off a few weeks before my due date since I'm due May 20th and school ends on June 7th. My school also has a daycare on campus, it's actually right across the hall from my classroom, so fingers crossed that they have an opening next year. It's really a perfect job for having babies and small kids. Lots of the people I work with have young families, and I'm looking forward to joining the club!
  • I'm the Director of Finance and Administration for a non-profit advocacy organization.  No travel for me, but I do have about a 45 minute commute one way, so all told I'm out of the house for about 10 hours day, which is going to be hard.

    FWIW, a friend of mine is having her second child as a full time fourth year PhD student in agronomy and sustainable agriculture. Her first is two years old so she also had him while she was in grad school. Totally doable!

  • I just recently left my restaurant mgmt. job in Memphis and moved to New Orleans decided to work a seasonal Macy's position (which paid a significantly lower rate$$$:-(.  ),while looking for better employment,then I found out I was pregnant! I stopped job searching for the feeling of guilt and allowing someone to hire a pregnant woman who may not be able to stay long...but I finally decided to get at it again.Im actually going to a jobfair tommorrow.Im not showing yet,although I can't fit my pants...but I better get hired soon!!! I really would like to find something like a desk job right now..I don't think restaurant management would be to good for me right now.

  • Marketing manager. I would say compared to a lot of jobs, it's not really conducive to having kids. Long, non-flexible work hours, expectation to bring work home with you/check email on phone/etc. No paid maternity leave and no option to work part-time. Boo.

  • I'm a buyer.  My hours are pretty easy as the work environment is very flexible with hours as long as my work is accomplished.  I normally come in at 7 since I have weekly calls with our sister companies in South Africa and Sweden two days out of the week and work through lunch so I can leave at 3.  All this so I can come home and try to get a bit of exercise in before studying for school.  I am also working on my BS in Supply Chain Management where fortunately all my classes are through distance learning.  I honestly love my job and everyone I work with.

  • I'm a nurse...I work with children who have cancer so I'm around chemotherapy a lot which can be scary for a pregnant person!  I work 3 12 hr shifts so it'll be nice to have 4 days off that I can spend with little baby when he/she arrives :)

    I'm a I'm the data, reporting and analytics director in the Advancement office in a higher ed institution. Its a desk job, regular week day hours and the VP is mostly flexible so I can do 8 to 4 or 9 to 5 etc. The benefits are great and its 10 min from home, which is amazing for Washington DC. All in all I'm thrilled with the career and plan to stay put while raising a family. The only thing bad is with all the great benefits they dobt have maternity leave! I've only been there since march and will only have 8 weeks saved up so FMLA unpaid here i come.

     

    I am in the same boat. I am a Business Manger at a University in Ohio. I work 7-4 and live about 10 mins from work... No Maternity Leave here either... I have been saving my time like a crazy person but will also only hit the 8 week mark... We have donation of time if we run out tho... Glad to see someone else in the same shoes as me :)

  • I'm a WAHM. I have my own photography business and I've tried to make it as kid-friendly as possible!

    For the most part, the hours are great because I try to plan around  my DH's schedule so that he can be home to watch DD when I'm out at a session or shooting a wedding. The majority of the time I'm at home with DD anyways, because I'm constantly at my computer editing photos (like right now). 

    As the business gets busier and busier though, I am contemplating part-time daycare for DD so I can get more work done / fit more clients into my schedule. 

    All in all, I have a pretty great setup which I'm thankful for.

  • I am a jury administrator in the U.S. Court system. Aside from having zero paid maternity leave, I'd say the regular 8-5 hours are ideal.

  • I work for a school district, but for a very rigid boss.  I used to be in a school and now work in the Central Office where I thought I might have more flexibility, but was wrong!  I am the manager of our cataloging division for the libraries and I work 12 months, so will have to take FMLA since we have no maternity leave in the district.  DH is also a teacher, so he will be off some of the time which will be nice. We are coming up with a savings plan so that we won't be too strapped while I am not working.

    Good question, it's interesting to hear all about the different jobs you ladies have!

  • I am an executive assistant for a consulting firm.  My commute is 2 hours each way.  I am a temp so I am trying to take a medical billing/coding program online in the evenings so that when the baby comes I can work from home.  The course is a 4 month course.

  • I am currently in transition because of this.  I am leaving my current job as a camp director at Thanksgiving and starting my new job as a staff recruiter on Dec 3rd.  While it has been fun  to live at camp and be able to do all kinds of fun outdoors stuff with our DS, My hours are long and at the end of the day I am sooo exhausted that my family gets the worst of me.  We also have no IRL friends with kids near by.   That is taking a toll on all of us!

    My new job is M-F 9-5 making a little bit better money and with good benefits. The only downside is that my old job provided housing which is a HUGE deal.

    OP thanks for asking.  It's really fun to see what all these ladies do!

  • I was hired as a nanny right as I found out I was pregnant with baby 2. Thankfully they liked me enough that they didn't see it as a problem at all.

    I get to bring my daughter and sometimes they drop their daughter off at my house. It's very convenient. I don't pay for child care and the hours/days are very flexible.

  • I'm a business analyst at a financial company outside of Chicago.  My boss is very flexible and I work from home once a week.  Our company in general is very family/working mom friendly (top 100 for working moms).  I had my DD while working there and it's been good.  It helps also that many people are at that age of having children and are all in the same boat.  Women with the same pumping bag I have or Dad's a little loopy on days from lack of sleep with their newborn.  I'm also lucky to work 4 miles from my home and DH works about 6 miles away.   We are both very happy how things have worked out.
