what are these contractions doing?!

I had my 38 week appointment today.  OB says my cervix has done nothing.  Nothing!  I have had so many contractions, including a full night with back pain.  What are these contractions doing if they are not dilating or changing effacement?!  I shouldn't have gone in with my hopes up because now I am discouraged.  I know I still have two weeks, but I'm really confused about how these contractions have done nothing...

    You're only 38 weeks.  Don't worry about it.  :) They are still toning your uterus for the long haul.  I went from zero dilation to partially effaced to full blown active labor in less than 24hrs with my first.  You cannot judge progress by your internals unles you're really in active labor.

    And, you may have as many as 4 weeks left...!

    I didn't have nearly as many contractions with my first; my water broke at home and I started having contractions about an hour later. 

    I know I shouldn't care about being dilated at all since it really doesn't mean anything in terms of progress.  I guess I'm just getting too anxious! :)

    Even if it seems like it's doing nothing, it is!  Just like a runner who has to train for a marathon, your body has to train for L & D.  Hang in there mama, you are doing great!

    That's a good point and thanks for the encouragement!  I want him to stay in for as long as he needs to, but I'm also so excited and it's getting more difficult to wait!
