WWPD? Re: Tip Jar

I've been a regular at this deli for year. Like... almost a decade now. I'm like Norm at this deli. Anyway, in the last few months, the employees have put out a tip jar on the counter. All this time I've been going there, I have not tipped. I'm talking about ordering food and taking it to go. On the occasions that I do sit down and eat there, I've always tipped, even before they put the tip jar out. The tip jar, to me, suggests that they want tips for takeout orders.

Anyway, would you start tipping?

  • I usually tip a lesser rate (5-10%) for takeout orders.

  • I would not feel bad for not tipping every time. They do not make an hourly wage of a waitress or bartender. Their tips are not the majority of their pay.

  • I tip a small amount (5-7%, usually) for take-out orders, especially from an establishment with a counter situation. Those tips are split evenly between the cashier and the people in the back making the food / doing clean up, usually, and when I worked in a sandwich shop that was sometimes the only money we had for lunch.

  • I'd throw my change in. Change here is up to $4.99 though.

I guess that's kind of part of my dilemma here. Most days I'm getting a sandwich for like $6. So what's really the point of throwing $0.40 in the tip jar? I feel embarrassed doing that. Then there's also the whole question (similar to having to pay for your airline baggage) of why I didn't have to pay for something yesterday but I do today. It's weird to me.

  • I'm not going to lie, tip jars really kind of piss me off.

I'll sometimes throw my change in, but if I pay by CC, then they get nothing.

Me too. I never ever put anything in tip jars, and the only reason I'm questioning this is because I'm a regular customer at this place and I'm friendly with everyone who works there.

Ooh, somewhat related, at the DD by me (that I have since stopped going to for an additional list of reasons) my regular order of a medium coffee was like $2.97, and the stupid kid would just not give me change back. I mean, I know it's just three pennies and who wants pennies and all that, but the fact that every day they just assumed I was giving them the three cents pissed me off on principle.

Me too. I use to bartend so I do feel for people who earn their money with tips. But if you take a job knowing that your pay comes for your hourly wage and not tips....and then you think the job is sooo hard so you put out a tip jar...that is not right. Why are we tipping you to do your job?

  • I'd put in a dollar or two once in awhile. Like pps said, the person working at the counter is paid at a different rate than the servers. It's a nice gesture but not required.
  • I tip servers and bartenders because their hourly wages are lower because they work based on the assumption that they will receive tips.

I do not appreciate that every sandwich maker/barista puts a tip jar out and expects me to tip.  They work knowing that they make minimum wage (I guess I shouldn't assume they all make minimum wage, but they make an hourly wage).  Making me a coffee while I stand there and wait for it, doesn't make me want to give you a tip.

  • I used to work at a pizza stand in the mall many many moons ago. They put out a tip jar and barely made $2 a day in it. I never did get my shareCrying

On the pennies thing sometimes I give them back, sometimes I ask if they want them but I never assume we should ignore their existence when returning change.

    There aren't any servers. It's not a restaurant, it's just a deli.

I'm diggin that random $20 suggestion, that actually crossed my mind but I could never figure out how to pull that off because different people work on different days and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't split it with everyone.

  • If I walk up to a take-out counter, order food and pick up my own food I do not tip. I don't know what I would be tipping for in that case. Tipping has gone crazy in my opinion.

If I sit and eat in a restaurant I tip but that's just not the same.

Ditto. Sometimes they do tip-sharing (counter person/cook), so every little bit helps. Even .40 cents.

Tipping has gone crazy in my opinion.

Sometimes I feel so bamboozled when it comes to gratuity expectations.

For instance, during wedding planning. Don't quote me $X if you are going to add 18% gratuity on top.  If I'm going to be expected to pay 18% auto gratuity, then PLEASE INCLUDE THAT IN THE ORIGINAL QUOTE.

Oh that's such a pet peeve of mine.  If it's automatically included, it's no longer a tip, it's a fee and should be included in the quote.  Gah!

  • Rule of thumb is you don't tip for take-out unless the order was significantly more complicated than "put my food in a bag".

  • As a former "counter girl", I always tip. The counter person is still doing things, like packing up your order and making sure you aren't missing anything. I tip 1-2 bucks. Maybe if I went every day, I wouldn't do it every time.

  • I don't tip on takeout because I worked in restaurants, and the person on the line getting orders out is the one getting the order together(which is typically a manager)- it's rare for the bartender/waitress to put it together, therefore, why should I tip you? Now regular places that I go to & know that the person handing me the food is the person who put it together (ie, waitress/bartender), then yes, I will tip a couple dollars. Now tip jars at places like ice cream shops, sub places, etc.- sorry no tip for you- you don't make waitress salary, you at least make min. wage.

  • I don't usually tip unless I throw my spare change in. I've worked the take-out counter and made minimum wage. Sure, tips would have been cool, but I was paid to do my job and I did. It was busy and dealing with the public is never just a walk in the park but it wasn't hard work. It's not like being a waitress and having a wage of $2.50 an hour and counting on tips to make up the difference.

Not the case when I bar-tended. I had to leave the bar (and time away from my paying and tipping customers) to put together to-go orders.

    I just tip. Period.

  • I do think that take out from a restaurant (like a sit down restaurant) is a little different.

Most of the time I will tip then because in my experience it is the bartender or servers that are packing up my food.  And that is taking their time away from their other tipping guests.

Would you tip if you came to Canada and ate in a sit down restaurant? December 1st I will be making $10 an hour and people are still expected to tip. The Subway across the street has the same minimum wage but you are not expected to tip because it is not sit down service.

Yes I'd tip if you were waiting on me, getting drinks and refills, bringing extra towels to help clean up the water glass my son tipped over, bringing a few courses of food, bringing extra ketchup, clearing plates away, etc. If you were putting my chicken salad sandwich and bag of dill pickle chips in a bag and sending me on my merry way I'd be less inclined to tip.

I do all those things! It's the thought that counts so thanks. Stick out tongue

No refills on soda though. That's their policy. Not mine.

Lame. Though if I ordered soda they'd probably be like "YOU MEAN POP?!" like the guy that yelled that at me in a gas station once when I was about 10.

  • I used to work the carryout counter at casual dining restaurant and I was paid like $2.00 above minimum but I still made less per hour than I would have being a server on the floor making $2.13 + tips.  Typically, the few generous customers that threw a dollar or 2 my way made it even out.  So my suggestion is occasionally throw a buck or two in, but don't do it every time.

FWIW I still remember the order of the regular who ALWAYS tipped $2.  He always got extra tartar sauce and the biggest slice of pie.

I live in Ontario and minimum wage at Subway or a deli with that counter person is over $10 an hour. I think that's far enough money to pass me my food.

EDIT Liquor servers still get about $8.90/hour. I will tip very well when it's appropriate but there's no one here making $2/hour.

EDIT I am not saying not to tip in a restaurant, only that the people at the counter are paid well for what they do.
