Daycare Policies Re: Runny Noses

Mamas with LOs in daycare, what's the policy regarding runny noses?  Is it just a fact of life, and they can attend like normal? Or do they not allow them to attend or send them home?

My daycare says kids can't come if they have green snot. I completely understand they don't want other kids to get sick, but it seems a little strict to me with how often kids have runny noses.

Re: Daycare Policies Re: Runny Noses

  • If it's runny but clear, it's okay at DS's DC.

Green snot is not allowed, but that is normally indicative of something more serious.

  • Green means infection usually.

Clear is normal and usually allergies.

  • Most of the kids at C's daycare have constantly runny noses.  They only make you stay home if the snot is green and thick.

  • You can go to our daycare with any kind of snot.

I swear that B had a runny nose of one type or another from the day she started daycare last January until May.

She already has her first runny nose for this year and it's only October :(

  • Our DC doesn't really care about runny noses or green snot. If the snot is accompanied by a fever then they make you come and get your kid.

  • I don't think our DCP cares about runny noses either.

I know for a fact he has had a runny nose there (with crusty, snot-smeared cheeks & all) more than once & they've always checked "Health - Fine" on his little checklist sheet they send home everday.  There is an option for runny nose but they've never used it.

This seems to be the policy at our daycare too. Cough, fever, etc. is a no go.

  • Either I've never been told, or we don't have a policy on runny noses. DS has a constant runny nose. So do all the other kids in his class. If they didn't let them come, they'd have no kids there.

  • Seems to be a mixed bag. I think she is a little lax with enforcing the rule, but I was just surprised to hear it was a rule in the first place.

  • Snot isn't listed in our daycare sick policy.  I"ll bet that unofficially they temp them more if they see green snot.

This is us too though they've commented several times that he had a runny nose but it wasn't green so clearly they notice the color.  Kinda lol at myself.

  • Color of snot just means how long it has been in there usually.  It does not mean infection.  I would tell your DC that are not a pedi.  DS1 has green snot all the time.  He has allergies though.

Yeah I will probably talk to her about it. She's a good family friend that I've known my whole life, so I feel comfortable bringing it up. Some of her thoughts and processes are slightly outdated, but she appreciates new information and open conversation which is nice.
