Up and down too much

For the last week DD has woken up multiple times at night. Usually she just wants a little snuggle. I only feed her at her normal feeding times. This getting up and down 4 to 5 times a night is exhausting! How can I get her to have a more restful sleep? She's also decided that getting up at 5:30am is a good idea. I stay home so I need her to wake up later. She wants to go to bed at 6:45pm. I've tried keeping her up longer but she still wakes at 5:30. Any ideas on how to get her to sleep later? Once we change the clocks, she'll be getting up at 4:30...ugh!

  • According to Ferber all babies can have their schedule adjusted, it just has to be done more gradually. He suggests moving it back 15 minutes per day. So put her to bed 15 minutes later. When she wakes at 530am wanting to eat, don't feed her until 15 minutes later. Etc. The things that wake them are habits, like eating at a certain time. So she is hungry to eat at 530am and that will wake her. Then because she has been in bed so long, she doesn't have the drive to go back to sleep after that.

Not sure if it would work but he has a lot of good information about sleep cycles, internal clocks and whatnot and he has a lot of experience working with children/sleep issues.

So it's certainly worth a try!

I would not be ok with 530am wakeup at all!

  • It sounds to me like her bed time is way too early.  How long is she sleeping for her first stretch of the night?

  • yeah I mean babies past newborn stage can't be expected to spend more than 12 hours in bed. And really I would say not a lot of 6 month old babies sleep 12 hours at night.

  • DS was doing almost the same thing a few weeks ago.  Waking up & just wanted to be held (refused the bottle).  It turns out that we think he may have just been cold.  We are now putting him in a fleece sleep sack & haven't had the problem since.  Just something else to try...  good luck & hang in there!

  • I don't think 12 hours of sleep is unreasonable. I think the 15 minute increment idea is a good one. I'm gonna try that too bc I'm scared of daylight savings as well. Fwiw V also goes to bed around the same time. She decided that, not me.

According to everything I have read and everyone I have talked to they should sleep or be in bed for 12 hours. I try and keep S in bed even if not alseep for 1112 hours every night. Maybe changing the bedtime will give you a few hours past 5:30!

  • Hmm I don't know, I was just reading the ferber book and he had a chart for total daily sleep requirements, for a 6 month old that would be about 13 ish hours of sleep.

So yes 12 hours at night, but then naps would be short. Or 10 hours at night and two longer naps. He says babies tend to drop the third nap around the 6 month mark.

M will spend 12 hours in bed sometimes however I guess you deduct the "awake" periods so she probably would only be asleep 11 of the hours. And she naps 2 hours maybe. Sometimes less sometimes more. So it does pan out for us.

And now that she is in daycare she has to get up earlier so she doesn't get the same amount of time in bed. I've noticed she wants to sleep earlier though, she gets fussy by 8 whereas it used to be more like 9 when she'd melt down. (when hubby was home with her a 9ish-9ish schedule worked excellently for him!) So now I put her down earlier.
