Need tips for travelling alone with LO out of the country

I'm very excited cause I'm taking LO to Canada next month to visit my family and friends there but I'm also nervous too. Whereas I've done a ton of traveling  all over the place by myself, I've never had to do it with an infant (DD will be exactly 4 months old when we go).

So if any of you have tips for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

More info: we'll be flying from Chicago to Vancouver BC, then transferring onto another flight to Victoria. Flight time will be approx 4.5 hours I think from Chicago to Vancouver.  I am breastfeeding and plan on feeding her on the flight under a nursing cover but I want to bring formula just in case to have on hand.

I know I am going to be very unpopular on the flight when people see me with a 4 month old, but I thought I'd bring ear plugs and hand them out to everyone sitting around me.

What should I bring with me in my carry on bag? How does it work bringing her carseat and base with me? I also plan to bring her snap n go and am wondering if I should check everything at the main area with my luggage or push the stroller/carseat to the gate and check it there. I'm worried the carseat is going to get bashed around and then not be as safe for her.

And then I know I have to have some sort of letter from my husband that says I am allowed to take her out of the country and that has to be notarized right?

TIA!

  • I'll be flying alone with my LO one soon too.  My husband will be with my on the first flight but he has to head back home early to work.  I'm tagging along with him on a business trip to Toronto and then visiting my family in some other cities in Ontario before flying back to Alberta.  I'm nervous about a 4.5 hour flight on my own. It'll be hard to carry all the stuff and the baby.  I'm sure she'll freak out and refuse to nurse, haha.

Good luck on your trip!  I love Vancouver Island.  I haven't been to Victoria but I drove from Nanimo to Tofino a few years ago and it's just soooo gorgeous and wild there.

  • Flying with an infant is really not that bad. I flew with both of my girls when they were infants. Just feed LO on the way up and down I nursed most of the flight each time, bring extra clothes for all of you, plastic bags for spiled clothes, and layer because it can get warm or cold on the plane. We gate checked the carseat and stroller because we used them in the airport this time around we used it to carry stuff and I wore the baby in the airport. And get to the airport early! :

  • We haven't flown with both boys yet, but out of all our flights with DS1, him at 4 mo was the easiest. He wasn't super wiggly and didn't fight the sleep like he did at 10 mo, 16 mo, etc. Feed on take off and landing if he starts fussing, it helps with the ears.
Carseats are free to check, if you don't want to push it thru the airport and break it down to go thru security. Gate checking is pretty easy as well. Have you considered wearing LO instead of strollering it? Just a thought.
Also, I am a big fan of backpacks as carryons instead of a single shoulder bag, things are also contained better.
