STM's activity now = indications later?

OK so this might be a bit strange of a question, but it is the kind of stuff that goes through my head.

If I put anything and I mean anything on my belly (my arm, a finger, a bag) she starts trying to kick it off... like I am intruding on her space.

That got me to wondering if she will be willing to be swaddled... it doesn't seem like she wants to be confined at all.

Any of you notice if this made a difference or is it just what they do at this point?

  • Wasn't true of DD.  She definitely reacted to pressure from the outside (I used to tell people just rest your hand, don't push down because usually she would move away).  But she loved being swaddled and we only stopped swaddling at 6 months at the strong recommendation of her pedi, she would have kept going if we hadn't taken it away!

  • WOW. Overthink, much? ;)

I actually think that is kind of a brilliant observation and I'm curious to see what people say. Lil guy likes to cuddle up all on one side, so I'm thinking he's opposite of your LO.

  • GAWD I hope not. DH and I are never going to get any rest.

  • DS was constantly moving before he was born.  I felt him super early for a FTM and I think it was because he was so active and strong.  At 14 months old he is still constantly moving, the boy NEVER slows down.

I think it's hard to tell what they will like/not like once born just based on their behavior/activity before birth.  Even though he was constantly moving, and seemed to move away from hands on my tummy, DS LOVED to be swaddled.  In fact the first night we used a SwaddleMe on him he slept through the night!  Apparently DH and I suck at swaddling with a receiving blanket.

  • DS was the same way, especially if I touched a foot. He is very cuddly, even at 6, and loved to be swaddled. But his feet are crazy ticklish.

  • It was a long time ago, but I don't remember DS being very active in the womb. Not as active as this LO, in any case. He was a very calm baby until he was able to army crawl, then there was no stopping him, and there still isn't.

  • DD was very active and always pushing away from stuff on her.  She kicked the fetal monitor off every single time they put it on her.  And once she was born, she hated to be swaddled.  HATED it.  So we didn't swaddle her.  And she STTN at 8 weeks.  Now, she is a cuddle bug, but hates being confined.

  • DD1 was very active and sensitive to touch when I was pregnant... but she LOVED being swaddled and really the only way we got her to sleep some nights when she was an infant...

  • I am the crazy lady that doesn't swaddle. So it doesn't matter. I mostly wear and co sleep, so no need for the swaddle. Besides, swaddling can sometimes make them overly secure and not give the proper feeding cues. I dunno. DD was swaddled in the hospital and then never again. She spent almost all of her time on my chest.

This is my LO too. Its like she gets mad at me if im trying to feel for her. If I lay down at all she starts kicking like crazy, like I interupted her.

  • I would love to revisit this in a few months... I am very curious!

  • It could be coincidental, but DS1 was very active while I was pregnant, and has continued to be afterwards. He hated swaddling, and never slept as an infant! I read somewhere that there is some research suggesting a correlation between activity in the womb and out, but I have no idea if there is any truth to it.

This baby is active too, and I HOPE she sleeps more than #1!

  • I just wanted to say neither of my boys "liked" being swaddled and they both fought it like crazy but yet they slept SO much better. Lots of parents say their kid doesn't like it-no they don't exactly but they sleep peacefully without punching themselves in the head. I'd say that's an improvement.

  • I wondered this EXACT SAME THING. Glad I'm not the only one who makes random correlations :P Little dude hates anything intruding on his space.

Ditto this!  My DS has always startled easily, even in utero.  Loud noises, pressure from the outside would make him jump - and he did when he was born as well.  Swaddling was the only way he would sleep, otherwise the smallest noise or slightest movement from him would set off his startle reflex and wake him up...every 15-20 min...all night long (we tried not swaddling many times!).  And he needed it until he was 6 months old.  And he would totally fight it at first - after a while though, he would immediately stop squirming when he got swaddled and go to sleep quickly.   Getting rid of the swaddle was a PITA, but that is another story!

DD was always calm in utero.  She was calm when she was born, but we swaddled her until 8 weeks.  One night, DH wondered if she really needed it, so he put her down without it...and she slept 8 hours.  She never "hated" it, she was perfectly happy with or without it - she just didn't need it like DS did.

  • No. My son was like that, and he liked to be swaddled (or at least slept better when he was swaddled. Swaddling him was tough, though. He managed to get his little arms out of a lot. It took us a while to find the right style of swaddling blanket and the right technique.
  • DD was very active. And she definitely played games with us, like if we touched her, she would retract whatever body part it was, then poke my belly again. She did like to be swaddled at first. She did everything early physically, held her head up, rolling, crawling, she was running right at 9 months. She's a monster, LOL. Not sure if there's a correlation, but she was definitely active inside me and was she was born.
