Poll: Would you let your preschooler ride a bus to school?

My daughter is going to our school district preschool which offers a bus to come and pick them up and take them home. When we found this out we said no thanks right away and we take and drop her off everyday. But she is the only kid in her class that doesn't ride the bus. In other classes other parents take there own kids just not in her class. Now that winter is coming I'm thinking about changing my mind and letting her ride the bus. One because it's getting so cold and I hate having to drag her brother out and about in the freezing cold. The second one is the fact that it would save on gas even though it's only 5 mins away.

At first I really thought she was way to young to ride a bus but now I'm thinking well maybe it's not a big deal after all. So what would you do? Oh and maybe I should add that we have had many time's of her crying because she was upset she can't ride the bus with her friends. [Poll]

  • Sorry that was my first time adding a poll I didn't mean add what I typed twice.

  • My concerns would be about the supervision on the bus (is there an adult besides the driver?) and how old the other kids on the bus are.  Also - what if no one is there to meet the bus?  Do they make sure an adult meets the child?

  • There's only preschoolers on the bus and the bus driver. Also my daughters teacher meets the bus the the school she goes too is only for preschool so it's not that crazy. Actually when I drop my daughter off at school the teachers aide has to come get her because her teacher is busy with the kids from the bus.

  • My son started preschool a couple of weeks ago when he turned three.  It's also the school district and they provide bus service.  We chose the bus because DS2 usually naps during preschool.  The bus has a helper along with the driver.

The first two weeks were rough, but every day got better.  He of course cried a ton the first day and I felt horrible.  The driver called me later to say that he calmed down by the end of the block and was asleep before they left the subdivision.  The next day he calmed down by the time he couldn't see our house. By the third week, he was talking about getting the bus a hour before he had to go.  And yesterday he bounded onto the bus without looking back.

    I would recommend it.

  • I would consider it. There are 5 kids out of 12, who ride the bus. Only those who qualify special services ride the bus. DD really wants to ride the bus, so I probably would. There is only a driver on the bus. Although I really like seeing the parents/kids/daily work posted.

  • My son rides the bus, he is in 3yo preschool.  He LOVES the bus.  We allowed it because we use it as a reward for good behavior in school.

I'm not sure if this is typical of all school districts but in our case, there are ONLY preschoolers on the bus because they have a different start and end time than the other kids.  They are harnessed into their seats with a 5 point harness.  The bus is smaller because they are not about to send out a large bus to load up 60 3 year olds.  The bus run is limited to 12 kids or 45 minutes.  That means that if the kids are so spread out that they can only get to 6 houses in 45 minutes, then the run is only scheduled for 6 kids and another bus run is added for the overflow.  This is important to me because the school district line runs through our back yard, meaning we are the further east house away from the school.  I was afraid DS would have to spend hours on the bus every day.  Luckily is usually less then 30 minutes each I way.  I think there are 9 houses on his run.

the bus driver has no aide but she is fantastic.  She decorates her bus with school themes and sings songs with the kids.  I thnk DS learns as much on the bus as he does in school.  It's been a really good experience for us, so far.

Given all this, yes, I would let DD ride the bus. FWIW - DD rides the bus at preschool for field trips and in the summer 2x a week for swimming. It was truly the highlight of the outings for her. I went on their first school bus field trip and DD and her friend were wiggly with excitement over riding the bus. And, the teachers were really good about going over safety procedures, etc.

  • She's 4? Absolutely no problem. DD1 took the bus to 4K from her daycare every day (and took the bus back to daycare).

  • We chose not to have DS take the bus to school.  It's a 2 minute drive to school, but I still prefer to drop him off and pick him up.  He also doesn't want to ride the bus.  I'm kind of an anxious person and there's too many things for me to be worried about.  I'm crazy, I now, but I'm just not comfortable with it at this point.

  • Yes, in that situation I would.  However, I do want to mention that you'll still be outside in the cold with your DS b/c you'll all have to wait at the bus stop, so I wouldn't use that as a decision making factor.

  • I voted no, but I'll admit I'm prejudiced against school buses. The town I grew up in (and currently live in again) is very small, so only a very few (less than 5% of the town) live the requisite 2 miles from school to qualify for free busing, so walking/biking or carpooling with a neighbor are the standard here. The first time I qualified for busing was to our regional HS. I rode the bus a few times and it was miserable (smelly, noisy, kids were rude and it seemed like the driver must be distracted by all of it) and stopped (instead I walked 2 miles to and from school because it was a lot more pleasant until senior year when I finally had a car). I  don't know what age I would let my kids ride a bus if we qualified, but probably not until 3rd-4th grade at the earliest.

  • No, I wouldn't.  Please make sure there are cameras on your buses.  I wouldn't let my child ride the bus if there wasn't.
  • My son started junior kindergarten last year when he was 4y3m old.  He rides the yellow school bus with every other kid in the neighbourhood (kids range in age from 4 years to 18 years).

I would not have a problem with it at all.

I voted "no"- but, with these details, I'd probably be fine with it.

    Ditto!

  • For me, it would depend on a lot of things.  Is it a regular school bus with no seat belts?  How do the kids get to and from the bus/class?  My DD took a bus from her PreK class last year to her speech preschool (in district but in another building that was 10 mins away).  The bus was a special bus used for the special ed program and the seats all had 5 point seat belts and the kids had to be put on the bus and taken off by the teacher/teacher aid or the parent.  It was a hand to hand situation so the kids were never left alone.  DD loved the idea of the bus but the 10 min ride took 45 mins to an hour due to the number of stops the bus made to pick up/drop off other kids and traffic.  After about a month, we made other arrangements to get my DD to and from her class.  If the ride had been shorter, she would have done the bus all year.
