Question for you STM's - Favorite Bottle

I am planning on breast feeding but I know I should get a few bottle's in case I need to supplement. For all you second time mom's what was your favorite bottle. My SIL loved Dr. Brown's but wanted to get some other opinion's. TIA

Re: Question for you STM's - Favorite Bottle

  • I've used Avent with all of mine, they've seemed to work out well.

Haha, my username should read "3Girlsand1BoyMama"...with #5 on the way!  (and then we're done.)

  • Our favorite was Breastflow bottles.  DS had NO problem taking to them.  He hardly never burped or spit up.  Only annoying part is that there are two nipples per bottle, however, the cap fits snuggly on the bottom of the bottle so you don't lose it.  So, it balances out.  You can get them at Kohl's. Burlington Coat factory and online.  BRU and Target stopped selling them in store :( .

  • With DS I used the soothie bottles by the first years, but they no longer make that bottle.  I prefer wide mouthed bottles and have heard that those are better if you are going to be switching back and forth from breast to bottle.

  • With my daughter, who is now 9 yrs old, I used Playtex VentAire and really liked them.  I bought them for this baby as well.  I used them pretty much from the day we got home and had no trouble switching between bottle feeding and breast feeding.
  • Another avent user.
  • Avent for my DD and now for my DS- love them!

  • We have always used the Playtex dropins recycled the liners It was easy cleanup since my kids are in daycare part time so I also pumped Also my kids would not use the latex nipples only the laytex ones since I also breastfeed we only got the slow flow ones

You didn't ask but I found freezing milk in ice cube trays was easier less wasteful then bags
  • I breastfed but had to supplement for low supply and DD would only take the Born Free bottles. They worked fantastic for us! Plus I loved the interchangeable nipples that included the option of sippy and trainer cup spouts. Really helped her transition from the bottle.

     HTH :)

  • We tried Born Free and DD never had a problem so those were the only ones she ever had.

  • I used the medela bottles (since they were easy to pump into) mostly and some Tommy Tippee's. You will want bottles just in case, especially if you decide to pump at all.
  • With my first we used Avent.. my 2nd wouldn't take them so we tried Breastflow and she did great with them..

  • I breastfed my little one, and plan to for this LO as well.  We used Tommee Tippee bottles to suppliment with pumped milk, and they were the only ones she would use.

  • I used Dr. Browns with DD because she was a major spitter upper. I liked everything about them, except too many pieces to clean. With DS we were always on the go and used Playtex drop-ins... super easy to clean and awesome to travel with. This time around I still have both sets, so we'll see what baby prefers.

  • We used playtex drop-ins (I nursed, but DS got pumped milk when I went back to work). He was not picky, so we didn't have to try multiple kinds of bottles or nipples or anything, but we mostly used the latex nipples, rather than the silicone ones. The liners were super easy to label for daycare and the generic brand ones worked fine (no need to buy the playtex brand). I got a few of the breastmilk storage kits for the playtex drop-ins system (had caps and attachments for the pump) and storage and pumping directly into the liners was a breeze.

My good friend had a very picky (when it came to bottles) baby, and her DS ended up only taking bottles with latex nipples - they are softer. So she used playtex drop-ins and the cheapie gerber bottles.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't recommend stocking up on any one type of bottle. I stocked up on the soothie bottles when pregnant, but ended up trying a ton of other brands to ease his tummy issues. We used drop-ins, breastflow, medela, tommie tippee, and avent before we were able to find one that worked well for us. Also, I BFed and stayed at home with him, so we didn't really use any of the bottles more than once or twice.

  • I breastfed and am a SAHM so I didn't use bottles too often (only when out or if I left DS with a babysitter and pumped milk), but we got Dr. Brown's and loved them. The biggest complaint I'd have about them is they have lots of parts that need to be cleaned. We got the dishwasher caddy and it made it super easy. (Again, I didn't use bottles much though so if you were needing to wash them a lot it would still probably be a pain)

Same here!  We used the glass ones and they clean so nicely!

  • I second wawa. I liked the wide-mouthed bottles to help with switching between breast and bottle. We used the Tommee Tippee. Stick with the slowest flow nipple of whatever bottle you use while BFing too.

  • Thank you ladies for all your input. I still have a few more weeks but wanted to get at least one type of bottle to start off with. My DH and I are really hoping that I will be a SAHM at least for the first year so I won't need too many bottles.

I am a SAHM as well, we bought 4 bottles and even that was too many!

  • Absolutely adore Born Free.  DD took everything we gave her, but Born Free was the clear winner.

On the other side, we had more problems with Nuk.  I donated all of those early on.

  • We used playtex drop ins and playtex vent aire with DS. I love the drop ins when I was breast feeding - clean up is a breeze with them too. I also liked the wide size of the nipples, DS had no problem switching from breast to bottle.

My only complaint was that the ventaires would very occasionally leak and the plastic pieces of the bottom needed cleaning too, so for this baby we will be using playtex drop ins while I'm breast feeding and Avent natural for when I start supplementing with formula.

  • I tried different ones...I wanted to like vent-aires, but I felt like they were leaky. Avents were nice. Honestly, I also got some simple inexpensive gerber bottles, and DD liked those. PP are right, sometimes you don't know what bottles/nipples will work well for your baby, until you try them.

I used these with both of my girls and plan to if needed with this one.  Never had a problem at all.

  • Honestly, the simple bottles like Evenflo nursers worked great for my daughter. Not a lot of parts to clean and they cleaned up great. And my DD never had any gas issues.
