Not for me. My first u/s was at 6 weeks and it was very clear it was twins. We even saw both heartbeats. I'm sure it can happen but I would think if it was 6 weeks or later they should catch both on a scan.

YES! I had 1 sono with my RE and they told us we were having fraternal twins. I had 3 sonos with a regular OB and same thing.... fraternal twins. Well, when we had the hospital scan at 13 weeks... they then discovered an egg spit and we had identical twins and a fraternal!
If I had stayed with my RE I am sure she would have caught that third baby at our next appointment. My regular OB's sono was not very sophisticated.
My first u/s at 5 1/2 weeks (thought I was further along) only showed one sac and one heartbeat. Went back a week later and there were definitely two sacs and heartbeats.
No I have a friend who was told twins....then they found a third. It seems like it would be crowded in there with multiples...so maybe you'd miss one. But I was just thinking about how often do they miss one that is a twin that they dx as a singleton.
We are very much planning for one. Already got my singleton stroller!
Yup, had us at 5.5 weeks, 6.5 weeks and 8.5 weeks with OB and only one we even asked of there was two because one of the pictures looke funny to my mil who is a labor and delivery nurse. Went to the ER at just under 11 weeks and there was baby b! I think if it happens, it's usually with identicals because they are so close they can hide the other one.
Ours were plain as day at 9 weeks. But I had a coworker whose twins weren't discovered until 6 months. And I met a couple who discovered theirs 6 hours before the birth!!! They blame Medicaid for their sh!tty ultrasounds prior....
If your tech knows what they are doing, they aren't going to miss a twin. Unfortunately, some techs are morons...
It's most common with identicals who are in the same gestional sac because they can hide behind each other. I had my first u/s at 10w5d. My OB pretty much missed the second twin until MH saw something. She even said "see only one, not twins" and had the probe out and was ready to be done. We might have not found out until 18-20 weeks if MH hadn't said something. As soon as she repostioned the probe, both babies popped up together. However if they were in separate sacs, they would not have been able to hide.
My OB would not even see us until we were at least 10 weeks along. We had no trouble seeing both babies. As you can see from those already posted, though, it does happen.
We saw 2 sacs at the 6 week mark and only one sac had a heartbeat. We went back to our RE 3 times and saw the second twin with a heartbeat each time. At the 10 week u/s (right before being released) the doctor found the identical twin in the second sac.
