High-Risk Pregnancy

XP: Does Non-Stress Testing = High Risk?

I have a question regarding Non-Stress Testing...

I started out "plus sized" and I have gained 20 pounds. At my 33 week appointment, the OB I saw ordered a "Non-Stress Test" due to my increased body mass index. Keep in mind, I do not have GD, high blood pressure, etc. After my first NST, the RN informed that I need to come back twice a week throughout the rest of my pregnancy.

Is this something I should be concerned about? Am I considered "high risk" or are NST's routine? The only person I ever knew to have them was a coworker who had Type 2 Diabetes (not GD) and she only had them at the very end.

I don't mind going in for the testing, but is the doctor not telling me something. Does this indicate earlier delivery or problems? The first NST produced "great results" said the RN on the Labor and Delivery floor that day.

Thanks ladies!

  • I'm not sure. I was under the impression I was getting them with my first DD and this one because of the GD. I would just ask them why.

  • I wouldn't think so, but I would ask the next time I went.

  • I started NST and transabdominal ultrasound twice a week at 33.5 weeks because of cholestasis.  I will be induced at 37 weeks.  I don't know the risk of doing this.  I only know that they want to make sure the baby is doing alright and he doesn't need to come out earlier than 37 weeks.  I don't have GD or high BP as well.  I agree with PP that you can verify with your doctor to see if you need to induce sooner.  Best wishes!

  • I would definitely ask why. I know for me I have never had to do them in previous pregnancies but since I am high risk this time around they want me to start them at 30 weeks 2 x's per week.

  • I don't have GD or PIH but will start my monthly growth u/s and twice-weekly NST's because my afp level was high, so I guess I am considered high risk because of that.  Maybe they just want to check to make sure your baby is still growing and doing well in there?

  • I'm high risk for other reasons but I get them bc I'm over 35. My MFM said she orders them for everyone over 35.
