Adoption

**jillianmb**

Hi! I have been following your blog for a month or so now as we are starting our international adoption journey. We are deciding between China and Russia and still have a ton of stuff to think about, but I did have a question for you.

Did you go through an agency for your adoption? You said that you saw your son and specifically chose him, how does that work?

Sorry if these are silly questions, thanks for sharing your knowledge! :)

After 2 years of IF workups/treatments and 2 IUIs, we have closed the door on fertility treatments.
We are very excited to be pursuing international adoption from China!

  • They are not silly questions! Yes we went through an agency; I do not believe you can adopt from Russia without an Hague accredited agency, especially after the new treaty goes into effect on November 1.

Our little guy was a waiting child so we found him through an advocacy site, which no longer has a public waiting list.  It was similar to Reece's Rainbow.  Waiting children are older or have a special need and special needs cover a broad range from minor correctable to severe and permanent. (Since my blog is growing we've decided to keep our son's "need" private.) When you are looking at agencies, ask if they have a waiting child program.  A number of my friends have adopted a waiting child and all our adoptions have taking about a year to complete, which is much faster than the average!

  • Thanks! We met with an agency last night that works in Russia as well as China and she told us about the new treaty in November so I'm curious to see what the changes will be!
