Special Needs

I have CP and am pregnant

Hi, all.  I know that this board is supposed to be about children with special needs, but I'm a mommy with special needs, and couldn't find a better board to post on.  I'm about 5 weeks along in my first pregnancy, and I have cerebral palsy.  I don't walk with assistive devices, but I definitely don't have a normal gait.  I don't have much balance, either.  I'm looking to network with other mom's with CP in hopes that they'll be able to give me some insight into navigating this pregnancy.

I have other health problems, and I know atleast one other mommy here has health issues (I do not know if a any other mom here has CP) but many of us have children with CP and I think you will give us so much hope and inspiration with your presence.  =)

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I have a son (3yr) with CP. I am not aware of any other moms who have CP on this board but welcome!

  • I'm an open book as far as any CP questions go, ladies...please feel free!  Here's a little background info. about me.  I was born at 26 weeks (I'm nearly 28, so yes, I consider myself incredibly luck to be alive) because my mom had a placental abruption.  My CP is of the spastic type and only affects my legs.  As previously mentioned, I walk "funny" and have little balance to speak of, but I was able to stop walking with crutches around the age of 17.  I've had a bilateral hamstring release and a knee scope done, and I'll definitely need more knee work done after this baby is born.  I have low muscle tone, especially in my trunk (think ribcage to belly) so I fully expect to show early...I don't have any learning disabilities and work full time as a nurse on a pediatric oncology wing.

Like I said, I'm an open book, so please feel free to message me!

  • Congratulations!

I had a roommate in university who's older sister had CP and that sister had a baby while we were in university.  And that's my story.  Looks pretty dumb know that I've typed it out.

    Welcome.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Welcome and congrats! I don't have CP but I do have MS so had some extra considerations and challenges for TTC and pregnancy. I hope all goes smoothly with your pregnancy and that you're able to find some more moms with CP to connect with!

  • Welcome!! My son has all over hypotonia and epilepsy, so he is a CP "maybe" since all other testing has come up negative. He is almost 3 and walking with a walker now. Woohoo! :)

DH's good friend has CP and is a daddy. Not the same, but he did see a PT during the pregnancy to plan how he would carry and care for the baby on his own. We bought him a sling carrier he used to carry the baby (he uses crutches to walk).

Congrats on your pregnancy. Being a mom is truly a blessing. :)

  • Congratulations and I hope we talk more :)
