First heart attack..Moses Basket PSA

So this may have been a stupid FTM move and if it is, please don't flame, just wanted to prevent someone else from doing this.

LO woke up for a feeding at 4 and would not go back down for anything, so we decided to put her in the Moses Basket between us, we sleep in a queen size bed. Well it worked  because she instantly went to sleep. It was uncomfortable though...thank God. DH is a bigger guy and I woke up looking at the bottom of the basket. It had tipped on it's side and rolled LO out of it and she was on her side against DH's chest. I panicked and picked her up, luckily she was ok, just startled awake, but it could have been much worse. I assumed DH's body weight rolled it towards him.

So just an FYI, Moses baskets are not for co cleeping.

  • Oh no! I can imagine your moment of panic. When I bring DS into bed to nurse, I put my tempurpedic pillow between DH and DS. My DH is a heavy sleeper and would not wake up if he rolled onto baby. I think there is actually statistical evidence that proves dads do not have that mom sense that we do when babies are in bed.

  • Yeah, I know he doesn't have that instinct because I told him about it this morning and he had no idea until I told him. I literally think my heart stopped until I picked her up and she stretched and gave me a dirty look for waking her up.

  • Scary! It's so hard when you are tired and just trying to find a way for them to sleep. On our first night home, DS and I fell asleep while nursing and when I woke up, he was laying next to me under the blankets. I almost had a heart attack and cried.

  • Scary! If I bring DD to bed with me I make sure she doesn't sleep between my SO and I. He is dangerous when he sleeps. Last night he woke me up by elbowing me in the head. This happens way too often.
  • Oh dear that is scary! I bring in DS to nurse in bed with me. We have a king size bed, so I put ds in the middle of one side and I nurse him. Once he is asleep I roll over to the other side of the bed and sleep. DH has been sleeping on the couch, I don't mind his snoring keeps me up and then I am able to bring ds in bed with me.

I build the Fort Knox of pillows between DH and DS and I so that hubby can't roll onto us.  It starts at the center of his chest and goes down to his knees so that the top portion is clear of blankets and pillows just in case baby turns to face Daddy.

  • DH has also started elbowing me in the head since baby has arrived... he must be overtired :)

Also agree with the weight of daddys, he tries to cuddle to my back while I'm nursing in bed and it throws everything off.

  • Aww, I used to wake up in the middle of the night thinking that DD was in my arms and was under the blankets. It as terrifying. Glad everything is ok.

I had those nightmare with my DS.  I would wake up screaming and tearing the blankets and sheets off the bed thinking he was under the covers at my feet.
  • !!! yikes how friggan scary! No flames here. You did what you thought was the safest thing. I am just glad that it was lesson learned, with no harm done.  ((hugs))
  • Oh jeez those moments are the worst. I woke up the other nihht, and I guess when the nurse swaddled him after taking his vitals, it wasn't tight enough and the blanket had gotten draped over his face. I jumped up and yanked it off of him and startled him awake. Not looking forward to this part of parenthood. Glad your LO was okay!

I've done this before. It's so bizarre to wake up thinking he's with me when he wasn't.
