My son has gas.. Help !

I nurse my son, but he seems to have a lot of gas. He is only 6 weeks old and I do not want to give him medicine, is there anything natural I can find at health store to use??  Thanks for your help!!!

Re: My son has gas.. Help !

  • I am using momma's bliss gripe water. It is vegan, vegetarian, and organic. Don't know if you consider that medicine or not.

  • I know you hate to give them medicine.  I had the same problem.  My LO is 5 weeks.  I gave him the little remedies gas relief and he feels so much better.  I checked with my sister-in law who is a nurse and she said it is not harmful.  If he is on formula your other option is to switch his food.  Sometimes that is the problem. Hope this helps.
  • You tube colic massage. I've been doing it a few times a day on DD and it does help. She instantly farts or poops during it. She's a very very gassy gal.

  • Does he seem to be in pain when he passes gas? My DD had loooooots of gas but she didn't have any problems passing them so I would occasionally do the massage that pp mentioned and I would lie her on top of me belly to belly while rubbing her back, the slight pressure always does the trick for us (also worked for burps as well).

Lately as her organs are maturing her gas has decreased tremendously.

  • Does the gas bother him? If not, I would just leave it alone. If it does, fennel is a gret helper for "colic". You can drink fennel tea yourself and he'll get the benefit through breastmilk or you can give him something like Wish Garden's Colic Ease, which is an herbal tinture that breaks up gas bubbles. Some milk-boosting teas contain fennel. You can also try modifying your diet--dairy seems to be a big culprit. Bicycle legs or a colic massage are good, too. DItto PP to look for You Tube videos. DS2 was very painful/gassy at 4-6 weeks. We started the herbal remedy then, per my MW who also is an herbalist, and he is a much happier baby now.
  • I second pixie with the fennel tea. My lo was having terrible gas pains and reflux like symptoms. My pedi had me cut out dairy and start drinking fennel tea. By the next day his symptoms were so much better.  I went to the store and bought a big bag of loose organic fennel seed, it's cheaper then buying the tea bags since i drink several cups a day.  I steep a Tablespoon of the fennel with hot water for 15 minutes.  Infant massage is also great.

  • This has been no-fail for us--when DD gets painful gas (she'll be literally screaming) I toss a thick towel or a potholder (potholder is best) in the microwave for about a minute, then hold it over her tum under her blanket and rock her--she passes gas every time almost instantly, and calms right down.  Make sure the fabric is toasty warm but not too hot.  Learned this trick from an RN--genius!

  • We have the same problem. We found that formulas intended for gas make him more gassy! So we use Enfamil Newborn, OTC gas drops, & pump his legs when needed.

  • Gas drops are great. You buy them at any store, LO can have them with every bottle and it's natural.

If you are 100% behind not using anything....you can bicycle his legs after feedings to help push out gas and burp him on his stomach on your lap to allow a little pressure to help with tension.

  • I second the idea to YouTube colic massage. The trick is to do it throughout the day. I try to remember to do it with every diaper change and it makes a difference! My LO was getting fussy from the gas in the evening though so by helping him get rid of gas throughout the day he now seems a lot more comfortable at night.

Also I think part of it is just having patience as their bodies mature and become better able to handle the gas.

    Good luck!
  • I have a gassy LO also! We use gripe water 2-3x week if nothing else helps.  I try to apply gentle pressure to his belly or hold him high on my shoulder and pat his back. It surprises me the burps I can get out of his little body!

Also, another non-medicine technique we use A LOT (every night at least) is baby massage.  There are specific techniques for gas and it seems silly but it really helps.  Not only can you massage his belly but if you use your thumb and rub up and down the sole of his foot that can work also! LO wasn't a huge fan at first but after a few nights he was SO calm and relaxed during his massage and usually falls right asleep now! There are some really helpful YouTube videos.

Hope this helps.  I understand the pain you feel when you baby is hurting!
