I have a few questions about LO, and I feel other mothers with LOs will help me better then Doctor Google. ![]()
1. LO has this cold thing, and I don't know what to do about it. He just got 2 teeth so I'm thinking it may be the teething. He's really congested and has a terrible cough that sounds like his lungs are congested. I run a vaporizer in his room, cover him in baby vicks, and suck out his nose. I'm not sure what else to do. We go for our 6 month checkup next week, but I'm wondering if I need to go before then.
2. How in the world do you cut LOs nails? My LO's are so long it's ridiculous. I can only cut them when he's asleep and he is not napping that often any more. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
3. I've tried some BLW with LO this week. I've given him steamed broccoli, carrots, and some bread. He knows how to get it to his mouth, and he tried to chew it. It seems though that when he gets a small bite to the back of his throat he throws up. I don't know if this just means he's not ready or if something's wrong. He's been eating purees and cereal for 2 months now so I thought he had the swallowing thing down pat. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem.
Sorry about all the questions together, but I'm hardly on anymore. DH is out of town, I work full time, and LO has been sick. I haven't had much time for anything. Any help you can provide would be awesome!!! Thanks!!
Re: A few questions
A few weeks ago LO had a cold and horrid cough that just wouldn't go away so they said to come in. We ended up treating him for pertussis with antibiotics because there are so many cases and he isn't 100 vaccinated yet. the test came back negative, but te antibiotics cleared up whatever it was and were totally worth it for my in pain baby. I ended up with strep a week later so there's a good chance that's what he had.
2. I try to cut her nails when she's calm which is usually right after she's finished nursing. If she gets wiggly, I sing to her to calm her down. Somedays it will take me the whole day to get her nails cut since I can only get a few done at a time.
3. Some babies have a more active gag reflex than others and aversions to texture. Where I used to work there was a 14 month old who would only eat purees and those yogurt melts. We tried hiding itty bitty pieces of soft food in the purees and she would gag like she was going to throw up everytime. And I mean pieces like the size of a grain of rice.
I hope your LO gets better soon!
1. I'd go into the dr because it's in the lungs now. For the nose, you can try baby saline spray then the snot sucker.
2. The piyo piyo scissors (from amazon) are the best. I can cut his nails while he's awake with these. I have to do them more often but it's easy so I don't worry about it
3. can't help you... we just started BLW but we started with avocado and then today banana. are the pieces soft enough?
1. I would call the doctor just to be on the safe side. L has her second bought of bronchiolitis and I thought it was a cold. We've done everything you are doing plus a humidifier.
2. I mostly cut her nails when she is asleep. I used to do it when she was awake but I took a good chunk out of her finger once while she was awake so now I stick to limp hands.
3. Not sure, L barely gets purees
1. I agree that it wouldn't hurt to call. Micah fought a cold forever and an antibiotic was the only thing that cleared it up. It sounded like it was in his lungs, but the doc reassured us that it didn't get in his lungs or ears.
2. I agree that I sometimes cut them throughout the day. He's actually getting better about sitting still for things like that. I can snot suck without him wiggling away now. Hopefully your LO starts giving you more time to get the nails done.
3. With BLW, there's not a whole lot of consumtion that takes place in the beginning. My LO loves chicken, but I'm not sure he's ever swallowed much if any yet. Their main source of nutrition comes from BM or formula at this age, so it's not a concern if your LO isn't able to swallow the food. He might swallow purees fine, but his gag reflex knows that big pieces shouldn't go down yet, because they'll get stuck going down!
I hope your LO feels better soon!
