3rd Baby- what car do you drive?

I will have 3 babies next June, my oldest is 3 1/2, middle is 2 and my next baby will be here in June.  I am not completley sold on mini-vans yet

But, I do have a Jeep Commander, and 3 car seats do not fit in the back (I have Britax for 2, and a peg perego for infant seat). If my 3rd row is up, then I can fit no stroller, etc.

Anyone have any other suggestions?  Or will I soon be a mini-van driving mother of 3??? :)

Re: 3rd Baby- what car do you drive?

  • With 3, it might be time for a minivan!!  But the first question is if you want them all in the same row. Either way, you will likely have to do some climbing to get them all buckled until the older one can do it themselves. Have you checked to see if Radians (instead of the Britax seats) will fit three across

I am a minivan lover--especially now that so many come with automatic doors & lift gates. Most have a split seat in the back so you could have a seat back there and have part of it down to store gear (though the stroller might still fit in the very back on its side.

We are expecting #3 and went from minivan to Ford Expedition (now that DS1 is 11 he and his friends and his stuff is bigger) and it is a total BEAST but I love it!  We will for sure be able to fit three across in the middle.

  • I have three kids (4, 22 mo. and 10 weeks) and drive a Ford Escape.  They all fit in the back seat. (Boulevard RF behind driver seat, Britax Frontier FF in middle and Graco Snugride 35 RF behind passenger seat).

It is tight, but it works.  I would suggest the Honda Pilot or GMC Acadia.

  • Our friend has four, 9 months, 4,6,8 years.  They have the Toyota mnivan which they love.  I rode around in it this past weekend and was able to place my 3 mo old DD's car seat in the 3rd row with relative ease.  I'm sold too!
  • Dodge Grand Caravan. Don't love or hate it, but I will caution anyone buying it that it only has three ff top tether positions, which is a giant pita. I wish there were five so I could put my seats in any seating position. Chrysler safety wont allow retrofitting the other two spots either. Buggers. My seats would install better outboard in the thir row, the middle is a pain.
  • I have a ford escape too. I have a 4 and 2 year old and im due in february. We are getting two Radians and a Britax Parkway booster. We just aren't ready to purchase a new vehicle so we are going to make this work for awhile.

This. One of Radian's huge selling points is that they can fit 3 across in most vehicles. We have a 4-door Wrangler which is about the same width as a Commander, and I think (haven't actually tried it) we could fit 3 Radian's across with no problem.

  • We're expecting #3 in Feb and bought a 2004 Honda Pilot to accommodate all 3. I refuse to go minivan but wanted  extra seats for carpooling and friends/family  riding with us.

For day-to-day we'll have the newbie in the middle seat, middle row, #2 FF outboard middle row and #1 and extra booster for carpool kid in the 3rd row because they can get themselves in and out without help.

For long trips or times we need the trunk we'll put DD1 in the middle row and put the 3rd row down. We've already tested and can fit three across with room to spare with all combinations of our seats.

One thought, you may be able to get 3 across easily with the right seats. Diono radians and clek foonts are both great seats that have a lower profile and should fit three across easily (in various RF/FF combinations). They also have tall shells and the highest RF weight limit on the market, so switching seats might keep you from needing another vehicle or a minivan.

  • If/when #3 comes for us we'll be switching to a Suburban or a Tahoe. No minivan for this lady!

  • We only have one baby, but 2 big dogs.  I drive a Lincoln Navigator and aside from the crappy gas mileage I love it.  We are hoping to get a newer vehicle in a year or so and considered the Acadia, but will probably end up with a Navigator/Tahoe.  I am not ready to convert to a minivan but we want the room for multiple carseats and stuff.

  • I will be stealing my husbands Honda pilot when baby #3 arrives in December! My sedan does not fit 3 seats.
