Moms of toddler girls--UTI or just irritation?

So today my 2.5 year old DD (who is potty trained, and has been for about 4 months now) was sitting on the toilet and complained about her vagina hurting (she pointed to it and said it hurt). She peed earlier this evening and didn't mention anything hurting then. Upon further investigation, I found that her inner labia is pretty red and irritated. She's also complained off and on today and yesterday of her tummy hurting. No fever though, and she didn't have any accidents at daycare today. I plan on calling the doctor tomorrow about this, but was curious if anyone had any experience with this? She had a UTI when she was 3 months old, but that was it. but that also came with a high fever . .

Thanks in advance!

Re: Moms of toddler girls--UTI or just irritation?

  • DD1 had a UTI a few months ago. She had been potty trained for about 2 months and started complaining about pain when she peed and having multiple accidents each day. I was pretty convinced it wasn't a UTI because she didn't have a fever, but after a week she was still having accidents and complaining of pain so we took her in. Turns out it was a UTI, and it's not uncommon for them to present without a fever.

  • My toddler is constantly complaining that her "butt" hurts and she has been saying nonstop that her "tummy hurts". However, she has also been dealing with tonsillitis and had not been eating and overall really cranky, so I assumed that is why her tummy hurts. I have examined down below and nothing looks irritated. Would a UTI cause abdominal pain? You got me thinking now...

  • My DD goes through phases of irritation too... we went through a big itchy thing a few weeks back...stopped using soap int eh bath & for about 4-5 baths (we bathe e/o day) I added a cup of vinegar to the water. Then applied aquaphor around 3 times a day and made sure to help wipe her & that all was dry after peeing. It worked well, she stopped scratching all the time after about 10 days.
  • DD completely stop potty training when she started complaining of this I wasn't sure if it was a UTI.
  • My oldest DD has had a few UTI's over the last year all with varying symptoms.  This last time she was complaining off and on that it hurt when she would pee and her stomach was bothering her.  She did end up having a UTI, but she is suspectible to them.

  • I heard irritation can happen after potty training from not knowing how to wipe properly.  Don't know how much help she has at school with wiping, but maybe it could be.  Better to be safe than sorry?  Maybe just call the doctor's hotline and ask a nurse to see what they say.

  • Thanks ladies! She seemed better this morning, and after daycare I check again and the redness had mostly subsided. I'm guessing it must've been irritation from soap. We're backing off the soap in the bath around that whole region for now in hopes that it clears up.

I don't think the tummy thing was related--like a PPer said, my DD does have a tendency to say this one a lot, but I did freak out momentarily when her comment about her tummy hurting was combined with other symptoms! She's been peeing like normal and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, which is good. I appreciate all the helpful feedback.
