XP: a few patches of eczema?

I noticed that DD is starting to get some eczema patches on her body, behind her knees, on her chest under her chin, on her neck etc.  It's not terrible, but I certainly don't want it to get worse or show up in other places.  What is your eczema treatmeant/routine?

DD gets a bath every other day, is this too much?  Since noticing the eczema after her bath I put aquaphor on the areas that are red.  Should I be putting it on more often?  Should I use something other then aquaphor?  Should I be lotioning her whole body and not just the red areas?

I know with the cold/dry weather coming it could get a lot worse.  Trying to help it before it gets to that point.

Thanks!

Jessica

Re: XP: a few patches of eczema?

  • Our pedi recommended a 1% cortisone cream just on the affected areas.  I put Eucerin cream (or any other lotion) on over that to seal it in.  It has worked well for us.  I know there are some natural options out there too, as some mamas don't like to use the cortisone.  I also only bathe him 2x/week, unless he has gotten dirty in between - for this very reason.  His skin tends to get worse if it's more often.

  • DD had a spot on her cheek that was really stubborn and would not go away.  Her pediatrician gave us some samples of the Aveeno Baby Eczema Lotion.  I would put it on her cheek after her bath and it cleared up with in a week. Now I just put it on when I see the spot flair up.  It seems to keep it under control.  Might be worth a try.  Good Luck Smile

  • We use a layer of cortisone cream then a layer of vaseline per our pedi. Once the eczema clears up I put vaseline on it to keep it from coming back. She gets baths every night (we might skip a day on the weekend), and we put lotion all over afterward. We also put baby powder in "creases" where she was getting heat rashes like under her neck and arms.
  • I've actually found that bathing daily has helped him (and sometimes he gets a quick, less than 5 minute, bath in the morning).  I coat him in lotion, aquaphor on the "hot spots."  I also use 1% cortisone when it flares up bad.  Our pedi said everywhere but the face.  Fortunately he hasn't had it on his face, just a bad spot on one wrist and sometimes the backs of his knees and his back.

  • We use cetaphil or neosporin eczema lotion every diaper change and aquaphor on top morning and night.

Cover him as much as possible to avoid scratching (socks, long sleeves, etc)

Swimming in a chlorinated pool has helped TREMENDOUSLY.

Hydrocortizone twice a day for five days every two weeks. This only provides temporary relief as it comes back right after.

Check out National Eczema Association for more info.

  • We have dry patches and I just use Aquaphor 2x a day. She does get a bath daily. I can't handle not bathing her. I just try to keep her as lubed up as possible and use white, unscented Dove to wash her. It is the most gentle. Even more so than the fancy expensive baby wash.

  • Once we switched to the Aveeno eczema therapy bath stuff, Alex's eczema was solved. We use the cleanser, shampoo and moisterizer specifically formulated to relieve eczema. The stuff has worked wonders.  He had red patches all over his legs and arms.  Now it's all gone, and has been for over two months.
