Anyone dealing (or dealt) with thrush? DF noticed a white spot on his lip last Wednesday so we called the nurse and they told us to come in. Dr. gave me the "crazy new parents" look and said it was just milk (some may remember I posted about this).
Well, over the weekend, I noticed his tongue was getting more white and he was getting more spots on his lip. I tried to wipe it away and he SCREAMED. Also, all weekend he was soo fussy and he is normally an angel. DF always believes the what doctors say and thinks I overreact so he wasn't much help. I asked MIL who nanny's for us to tell me what she thought on Monday. She said it definitely didn't look normal so I called and made an appointment for that afternoon.
My favorite doctor at the group took a look at him and sure enough, it's thrush! (So a lesson for FTM's like me, always trust your gut! You know your baby better than ANYONE). They gave him nystatin oral suspension. Since giving it to him, he's been sleeping more and eating less. I looked up the side effects of nystatin oral and it does say it can cause upset stomach. Maybe the sleep is just because he doesn't feel well?
What have your experiences been?
Re: Thrush
Thanks! I'm not breasfeeding so hopefully it means quicker recovery (less risk of passing it back and forth). Did you boil everything every day until it was gone to risk it being passed back to baby?
It is TERRIBLE!!! I'm sorry to say that as you are just now finding it, but it takes forever to go away! We are into week 6 of treatment and it is finally looking better and we started the day I saw a small fleck on her cheek. It got a lot worse before it got better- even with treatment. I am constantly sterilizing anything that touches her mouth- bottles, toys, you name it. We dropped the whole paci bit way back when we started treating her since I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with sterilizing them all day long.
The thrush never effected DD's sleeping or eating and she never acted as if it bothered her at all. Some tips for applying the meds:
-I'm sure you know to give it after you feed him and nothing for at least 30 minutes after the medication.
-I squirt half the medication onto one cheek and rub it on (as if to coat the cheek) with the medicine dropper. Fortunately she only has it on her cheeks, but do this for all surfaces that it is covering.
-After applying it to all surfaces, I kind of squish her cheeks to see if the extra medicine she still has in her mouth can coat the surfaces even more.
-She then proceeds to spit it all out, which is fine or it can be swallowed as well.
The medication doesn't stain clothes after washing, but will cause a yellow spot prior to washing, so I always use a bib.
Good luck! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I'm really sorry you are having to deal with thrush and I hope it's treated faster then what we have dealt with.
