Houston Babies

Health Insurance

Hello,

I am new to Houston. My husband and I just moved here a few months ago and last week I found out I was pregnant! Yay! We are very excited but also terrible procrastinators. I am 24 and moved here straight from my parents house in IL so I am still under their health insurance for free.

Well, I just looked it up and I'm not completely sure their insurance will cover any prenatal care for me. My husband works, but I do not. Does anyone have advice for cheap insurance with decent prenatal care or know any info on free clinics that do prenatal care? I really need to make my first appointment!

Re: Health Insurance

  • Congrats!

You need to check with your insurance to see if you are covered.  If not, then you will probably have to apply for Medicaid (maybe Medicare...one of those).

To my knowledge there is no private insurance that provides maternity and if there is it is very expensive and you can't be pregnant when you sign up for it or it is considered a pre-existing condition.

    I hope that helps.

  • Thank you.

This does help. I am terrible at all this insurance stuff.

And I can't ask my mom because I don't want to tell her until after my first appointment
  • You might need to tell her sooner...most ob/gyns will require a "down payment" of sorts at the first appointment, and this fee will be much higher without insurance/medicaid coverage.  You might also look into WIC.
