Are you a Mama with a Unique Name?

I'm a mama with a unique name and I'm proud of it; however, my LO has a more common name. Of course, I get tired of ppl mis-pronouncing my name. Furthermore, I get mad when judgement is inflicted on me because of a name.

Anywho, just wanted to do a roll call of ladies with unique names.

Re: Are you a Mama with a Unique Name?

  • My first name is a traditional Hungarian name so most people haven't heard of it around here.

  • My name is Zoe, it used to be unique when I was younger. Now, not so much!

  • My name was extremely uncommon when I was a kid but it has steadily climbed up the list, I think its in the top 20 for my state now.

I HAAAATED it when I was younger because people always misspelled it and mispronounced it.  And I could never find anything with my name on it.  I embraced it when I was about 15, now I love it.  People still misspell and mispronounce it but not as often.

  • I don't know if my name is unique, but it's uncommon and has several different pronunciations, of which mine is the least common.  So even if people have heard of my name before, odds are they're pronouncing it one of the other ways.

It does make me think twice about saddling my kids with uncommon or unique names.  I prefer classic anyway for boys, thus James for my son, but for girls I'm more open to different styles.

  • My name is Carly which in the 70's was somewhat unique. I love it and always have!

  • Not really.  My name is Mary so it's not unique per se but I was always the only one I knew growing up.

  • I have a unique name.  It's a legit name that is just not spelled the traditional American way. Thus, my son has a traditional name.  I love my name, but it's always been a hassle making sure people spell it properly and having to explain why it's spelled the way it is, so I didn't want my son to go through the same thing.

  • A friend of mine has a unique name and she told me growing up with it, she hated her name. She made sure to give her own DDs better known names that still aren't overly popular.

  • My name is Aviva and I've pretty much always loved having a unique name.  I would have given my kids more unique names, but I had to compromise with my DH, who is into very common names.

  • Mine was unique when I was growing up -- Elly (full name). Now the name itself is not unique, but I guess the spelling is, since I still don't know any Ellys.
  • My name is an uncommon French surname. My mom had no idea of its origins or if it was legit but met someone with the name and loved it. I love my name. I like that I don't know anyone with it. It's pretty easy to pronounce if you actually look at it, but some of the pronunciations people come up with are crazy!

I want unpopular names for my kids, but still legit names.

  • I find it funny that several of the people responding don't have unique names at all. They're actually really common.

I have a very unique name. It barely made the top 1,000 on the Social Security list this year and it didn't make it at all until I was in high school. It's a legit name of foreign origin. I've always gotten compliments on it but I've also had to deal with people mispronouncing it often and everyone wants to know how my parents came up with it. Basically, it's been the topic of discussion with just about every person I meet.

And that's why we're giving our kids more common names, although not the most popular.

  • I have a fairly common name, but a different spelling.  Sometimes it bugs me but its usually not worth the hassle of correcting unless its something official.

  • I never go by my first name, the most common name ever in the '80s. I go by my middle name, which is a legit arabic name with a spanish twist. I used to be the only one in my province with that name, until Niece was born. In the country, we are three, all from the same family.

So yes, I would say it is pretty unique, which is why I go by it.

  • Ok ladies, spill your names! I LOVE unique names and I'm still looking for ideas for my baby girl.   Please please share your unique names!

  • My first name is somewhat uncommon, but my mother chose a you-neek spelling.  Paired with a difficult-to-pronounce last name, my name was alwas something I was very self conscious about when I was growing up.   I still am to a degree, but it's not as bad for me anymore now that my maiden name a pretty common one.  With what I experienced as a kid though, I definitely will not be choosing a unique name for my kids.

  • I have a boys nickname, with an "i" on the end to make it female (think Jimmi or Tommi).  I don't like it.  It is who I am now, but it stunk growing up and is quite irritating at times.  I always get the double take, I've answer "what's your real name?" all the time, and when i was 18, I got a nasty letter from the Selective Service because I didn't register.  I had to send my birth certificate to prove I am female.

Due to all this, I lean very much toward classic names.  I would not wish this on any daughters  Or sons, for that matter.

Yeah, it's funny that so many of us are being so secretive!  I'm Tamara - like I said, not really unique but not very common, and I pronounce it with the stress on the first syllable - TA-ma-ruh.  Most people say ta-MA-ruh or ta-MAR-ruh.

  • My name is Piper, which has gotten a lot more popular in the last 5ish years, but I didn't meet another person with my name until was in high school. A lot of people on here criticize it and say it doesn't age well, which always annoys me lol. I do not feel as though I've been held back by my name at all. I also get compliments all the time.

I'm Alix (full name, not short for a version of Alexandra). I will be correcting the spelling of my name for people until I take my very last breath! :-)

  • I'm Shana, pronounced Shay-nuh.  I've personally always hated that people disregard the long A and pronounce it Shan-na.  I also hear Shannon, Shania, and Sheena a lot!

  • For the ladies that spilled their names, Thank you!!! For what it's worth, I like them all.  I worked with a Nicola (she was from the UK) and to me Nicole is a bit boring.  I also love Piper.  The majority of posters on this board only like classic names, so don't take offense.  I really love unique names, and have one that I really like but am having a hard time with middles names.  The name I like is Bellamy.  Everyone always suggests Jane for a MN but I really hate it for some reason.  I don't think I want a one syllable MN.  I was considering Bellamy Simone or Bellamy Autumn, or even Bellamy Sofia, but nothing is striking me as 'the one'

I also really like the name Vivienne...not unusual but I think it's pretty.  I'm afraid of it seeming to become more popular, especially after Angelina Jolie named one of her daughters Vivienne.  This is so hard!

This is my situation as well, even though I've always felt my name fit me and I do like that's different.  For my children I want unusual names that are fairly gender specific and spelled the traditional way.
