Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Pregnant lady with a question...

I am currently pregnant and looking forward to joining this board in June. I wanted to start "stocking up" on diapers (Amazon is running a pretty good special on Pampers Swaddlers, which I hear are the best--30% off). Did you do this? And if you did buy any in advance of the birth, what size did you buy? I am thinking of buying a few boxes of the size 1 (8lb-14lb), since they would be good with most average sized newborns...right?

Thanks!

Will baby #3 be another girl?

  • don't do it.

while it's a great idea in theory, swaddlers may not end up working well for you & then you're stuck with a bunch of diapers that you can't use.

  • Loading the player...
  • Yeah, size 1's would be your best bet to buy a few boxes of.  My son was 9 pounds when he was born, but still spent the first month in newborn diapers, but since then he has been in size 1's and we have gone through 5 or 6 boxes of them.  I think he will be in size 2's very soon.
  • Yup, great idea! We bought a lot when we saw they were on sale. Maybe buy one package of newborn, just in case but size 1's will last a while.
  • I did not do this ... and thinking back, I have mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, having a stash of diapers would've been awesome. On the other hand, you never know how big/small your LO will be, and how long they'll be in a particular size etc. My BFF swore up and down her DS was only in swaddlers size 2 for a couple of weeks. My DS has been in them for 2+ months now.

::shrugs::  It's just a hard thing to gage.

  • I I don't think you should stock up.  It's impossible to know which diapers you prefer until your baby arrives.  Sometimes babies have allergies or get rashes from certain diapers.  Or the diapers may not fit your baby's build properly, which can cause leaks.

You don't want to end up with tons of diapers you can't use.

  • We only just graduated from NB to size 1 and the size 1 is still a little too big for her. Every baby is different and will grow at different rates.

I'd say you're safe if you stock up on size 1 because even if you don't use them right away, you will eventually. ?And get some nb for when dc is born. You know??

I agree here.  I would be more inclined to get a few different brands of size 1's.

  • Our baby was 8lbs 5oz and size 1 diapers were too big for him for the first 3 weeks at least.  He went through about 2-3 packs of newborn diapers (40 per pack).  He is still using a box of size 1s, and will probably be in these for awhile longer.  I would suggest having at least one pack of newborn diapers.
  • I agree, don't do it. We had to experiment with several styles and brands before finding one that worked for DD. There will be other sales!

  • I personally wouldn't stock up because you never know if your DC will need to switch.  We started with Pampers NB (DS was 8.7 and still needed NB) and then tried Pampers size 1's, but he kept blowing out of them.  We went to Luvs and eventually ended up with Huggies, which I never thought we'd use, but they have been great for us.  HTH

  • I wouldn't do it b/c you don't know what size or brand you'll need.  My son was almost 8 lbs and wore newborn size for 2 months.  I thought he'd only wear them for a week or 2 at most.
  • I would be careful, and make sure you can return them.  DS grew like a weed and would already be in a size 3, but we CD now. Also some babies can be allergic to a certain diaper.  I wouldn't get too many IMO, there will be other sales and you might end up losing money if you can't use them.

  • My DS was in newborn size for 5 weeks and is in size 1 now...he weighs 11lbs so I expect he'll be in them for a few more weeks.  I wouldn't buy too many newborn, and maybe 2 cases of size 1.  Congrats to you.
  • Don't stock up. There will always be sales and specials. And FWIW, I hated Swaddlers. We're a Luvs family.

  • I wouldn't stock up on a ton of diapers.  When I had DD (9 years ago) I loved huggies.  And thought I would this time too.  So I bought two nb packs and a size 1 pack.  Well I hate them.  They don't hold anything!!  I do love pampers swadlers though.  They hold a ton.  If you are going to get some, size 1 is a good size to get.  But I can say, my DS was born at 8lb 10 oz, and size 1 are still a little big on him.  But again, don't buy a ton.  You never know how your DC will react to the diapers.
  • my DS was NB diapers for almost a month.

    he was 7.10 at birth.

  • Just to add....I got tons of diapers as gifts!  We never bought a pack of size 1's because of the gifts.
  • I don't see any problems with doing this- we don't stick to one brand with DS, we just use whatever we have coupons for or find on sale.  I was glad we had some stashed away in all sizes.

  • I stocked up more on wipes and got 1 box of size 1 pampers swaddlers and 1 box of size 2 Huggies. The only negative will be if your child has allergies to a brand. I know we all end up having a brand preference as far as diapers go, but I was fine using everything I received at showers and purchased myself and now I know which ones I like best. I would just keep my receipt for everything.

  • Nope.  We ended up hating Pampers.  Every baby/family is different.  As are size/fit for your baby.  Don't buy if you can't return...
  • I didn't buy any diapers until we used all the ones that the hospital gave us first.  We wanted to make sure of how DS reacted to them before stocking up.  I wouldn't buy them if I were you.

  • I personally stocked up all tha I could and was GLAD I did!! Mind you, my child turned out to be fine will all different brands. I mainly stuck to:

Luvs, Pampers, and Huggies Size 1 - Size 4

I'm also a MAJOR couponer, meaning I don't pay full rpice for anything including diapers. The most I'll pay for a jumbo pack is arounf $5 and that's if I REALLY need them. Thus I stocked up at $4 and below:

Here is the guideline from another coupons website of how many you'll need of each size:

Size 1 - 10 packs (this count worked for me)
Size 2 - 22 packs (this count worked too...)
Size 3 - 24 packs (Starting running out of 3's needed to go buy more)
Size 4 - 18 packs (Just starting on the 4's and DS is almost 6 months) - he's a BIG 6 months lol.

    HTH!!

  • DD was 7lbs 12oz at birth and we used NB for about a month.  She was in size 1's for a month and size 2's for a month.  I'd buy one box of each of those.  At 3 1/2 mths she was in size 3s and they should fit her for a long time. You could stock up on those.  We received a lot of size 1 and 2s at our shower
  • My MIL got the bright idea to stock us up for diapers.  The only problem was he grew too quick, and I still have a brand new pack of Huggies size two in the closet. He's in size four at six months and flew through the sizes here.  I also wanted to use cloth instead.  Some of the brands I absolutely hated, others were great.  I'd say buy only a few if you're going to do it so you have some on hand, but don't go hog wild.

  • See I don't like this idea. It is good, in theory. But what if you don't like the brand? True, swaddlers are most popular. But different diapers fit different babies differently. I've always loved swaddlers but my SIL hated them on her 3rd DC. Plus, it is impossible to know the exact size and shape of you future baby, as well as how fast he or she will grow and when growth spurts will happen.

Comparing my 2 DD's, they went through diapers (so far) at very different rates, and moved from NB to 1 to 2 at completely different ages. (# 2 is still in 2's so I can't compare any further).

  • I am going to have to go against the grain here. I stocked up and not on one particular brand. I bought a couple NB packages, several packages of 1's and a couple of 2's. We had Swaddlers, Huggies, Luvs, and Wal-Mart brand. We didn't have a problem w/ DS fitting into any of them or leaking out of them.  So, I say, go for it!
  • I stocked up on diapers and totally regret it.  Huggies leak for us, he's allergic to the Kirkland diapers, and he never wore one single newborn diaper. While Pampers are our faves, they don't work for everyone.

My advice: don't do it!  Buy a few packages (not boxes), and put that cash into a savings to buy things you need when baby comes.

  • wow you got a lot of replies, lol!!

my two cents...we received alot of diapers as gifts and we got different brands so it was good to have them to try and see which ones we liked.

Also Pampers/Luvs seem to work well for boys where as huggies for girls...my friend has a girl and hates pampers but says huggies work well.

Also...diapers are ALWAYS on sale :-) I wouldn't worry too much about stocking up on diapers..I know how you feel, I wanted to stock up on everything but I held myself back and I am glad I did:-)

I returned so many things after ds was born..things that i thought I absolutely needed and didn't need them at all :-P you will have a much better idea what you prefer once dc gets here!!

oh and ds grew out of size 2 within 2 weeks!! I bought a few packs in advance and only used one 228 count box=0

    enjoy your pregnancy :-D
