VBAC

VBAC with thrombocytopenia (low platelets)?

Has anyone had a VBAC or plan to VBAC with thrombocytopenia?

Thanks!

Re: VBAC with thrombocytopenia (low platelets)?

  • When the hospital did my bloodwork after I was admitted for my VBAC, they discovered that I had low platelets. It didn't seem to be a factor in whether they allowed me to VBAC, but I don't know how low of count it was.

  • I was supposed to have my platelet testing done the morning I went into labor so I don't know if I have a platelet disorder but as my mom and sister both have one (storage pool disorder) they treated me as if I had one. They insisted on a shot of pitocin to deliver the placenta immediately for me. I had asked to deliver it naturally but they said no. And frankly I was so over L&D by then I didn't care. I had a traumatic delivery so they needed to sew me back up.
  • yes!! i had 2 vbacs with low platelets! had to go to a hemotologist last 2 pregnancies. (didnt have an issue with the first)

This last pregnancy (gave birth sept 26th!!) my platelet count ranged from 70-90,000. i ended up going on Prednisone (steroids) the last few days of pregnancy leading up to labor. had an induction planned right after the meds would end so platelts would be up for labor, but my water broke the day before. Bloodwork came back and was in the 130's. so i was able to get an epidural (at 8 cms!!!) lol.

I did bleed pretty bad after the placenta came out. i had an enormous blood clot come out of me like half hour later, my husband thought he was gonna lose me thats how big it was. i didnt look. lol. they shot me in the thigh with something (methergine?) to help my uterus contract a lot, and i was on that for 2 more days. I'm fine now! Had a pretty quick labor, like 5 hours including the 2 hours the doc let me rest after epidural, and she was out in 6 pushes.
