Hi all, my husband and I adopted our beautiful daughter from Japan this past year, we were the first from our city to do so and one of the first through the program here at all. We are now hoping to adopt a special needs child (specifically cleft lip/palette) from Japan next but know our wait will be much much longer this time around. We would love to connect with other adoptive families, especially those who have adopted from Japan and also connect with other families who have adopted special needs children.
Cheers!
Re: Any others adopting from Japan out there?
Adoption from Japan is so rare... how'd you decide on Japan for your first daughter? Just curious

My husband and I speak some Japanese and travelled to Japan for our honeymoon. We looked into adopting from Japan, but it did not look feasable. I'd LOVE some informatrion on how you did it and what agency you used, if any. Are you of Japanese descent, a resident there, or hold citizenship there?
Thanks!
Wow I had no idea anyone was responding to this, my bad! My husband is of Japanese descent, but we are both Canadian, I'm as Caucasian as they come lol, but I studied Japanese art and culture as part of my University education and have a big affinity with their culture.
We went through our agency here in Victoria but they didn't have a program so we used a facilitator from Tacoma, Faith International. They have a website with info but it is not well updated, best to actually call for more information. Most infants are newborns although friends of ours adopted a 5 month old and recently a 9 month old was also placed. Our daughter was one month when we got there but other families have arrived within a week of their child's birth. We have openness with our daughter's birth mom which is extremely rare and a little challenging as she has no English and our Japanese is improving but not fluent.
I know that they place about 30 babies a year through Faith to BC and the US so we aren't alone but we were one of the first in our Province and the first in our city. In BC there is another agency that works with yet a different agency in Japan to place children from orphanages as well so I would be surprised if there weren't more US agencies that offer programs too
