Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Night Waking at 15 months

Hi, my son hasn't been the greatest sleeper, but he's been on a pretty consistent pattern of sleeping until 4 or 5am the past few months.  All week this past week he has been waking up at 11 or 12 and shrieking, I assume he is in pain because in my arms he would still cry and flail around, but he is fine during the day and going down for bed.  It looks like he has a tooth on the side coming in that is probably bothering him so I have been giving him Tylenol when he wakes like this, but it has been going on for over a week.

Has anyone experienced something like this with teeth or anything else?  How long would a teething problem go on for?

Re: Night Waking at 15 months

  • Try advil or motrin. It seems to be a little bit stronger than Tylenol. These larger teeth can be more painful. If it persists, consider a possible ear infection!? Otherwise, it might be another phase. We have had wake ups/staying awake for hours lately....and Ive concluded it's a habit. GL

  • My son is 16 months and has been getting up in the middle of night multiple times. Its all because he has a molar coming through! some nights he is fine and sleeps 7pm-630am.. Then we have a night like last night where he was up at 9, 10:30, 1:30 and 6am for the day! I have found the Motrin is alot better for when they are sleeping.

What amazes me, is during the day they are fine! No need for medicine. But at night its like a different child!

  • mine does that occasionally.  She has a molar coming in too.  The other night she woke at 2AM with a big fudgie in her diaper.  I changed it and she went right back to sleep.

  • This exactly what is happening! I'm sorry you are going through it too but it makes me feel better to know he's not the only baby that is doing this!
  • My LO has been STTN for a while, but the past two nights she's been up 1-2 hrs overnight while I check/try this or that and then when I give her pain reliever she settles.  She's fussier during the day too, picking out soft foods, etc. so I'm pretty sure it's molars here!  Wishing your LO well.

My child has been doing this off and on for the last month! It has been exhausting & I feel your pain. Molars can take quite awhile to fully come in. My niece went through it for a good two months before her sleep got back on track.

Then there's the 18 month sleep regression, which I actually think my DD may be going through now. Hopefully you won't get hit with that too. My niece managed to skip it, which is nice since she had such trouble with the molars.

  • A friend of mine just went through the exact same thing! She had no idea what was going on, her daughter would just wake up screaming in the middle of the night. After a week or 2 she had 2 teeth break through and she was back to sleeping regularly.
My daughter will be 15 months on Friday and she's having some sleep issues right now too, no screaming, but just waking up which she NEVER does! I don't think she's been up this much consistently since the 4 month wakeful period. So maybe it's just a phase, new milestones, teeth, growth spurts.
