Shoulder displasia risk with big babies

"Shoulder displasia risk with big babies"

One week overdue today and the Dr. Said I am at risk for delivering a baby with shoulder displasia if i tr to go vaginal birth.  I guess this is where they might have broken bones if they are too big.  She was 50 50 on whether I Should do C-section or not due to the risk and his size(9lbs 12oz predicted). Either way they are inducing tomorrow.

We hadn't heard about this before, so trying to wrap my head around what this means and rhe risks.  Anyone out there deal with this or had this posed as a risk?

  • I have never heard of this either, I'll be interested to see what others have to say. My mother in law had a 10'10 a 9'12 baby without so much as an epidural... No problems.

  • Stalker here from the December month board. My niece was actually a relatively small baby but they had this problem. SIL was still able to deliver vaginally but my niece did have a bruised shoulder. You may want to check out the spinning babies website as they have a technique for use during labor when the baby has shoulder displasia. GL

  • I know at least 2 ladies on here have had over 10 lb babies and did not mention shoulder problems. Queenie is one of them I believe.

  • This was something my dr was worried about for my son. I had GD, and my son was no where near coming down. I decided to go with a c section due to many reasons, my dr suggested it due to his predicted size, and it being the safest option. My main concern was having him delivered safely, bc of something our friends went through this year my fear overwhelmed my decision. I wanted whatever was best for his health. With that said I'm sure whichever way you go things will be fine. I was terrified of the c section but it wasn't as bad as I thought! Good luck!
  • It's super serious and involves more than broken bones. That said, many women deliver large babies with no problems, and I am sure you know that the u/s are often wrong.

  • It's not just largeness, but the proportion of how wide the shoulders are vs the pelvis. We would go on SD codes in NICU because sometimes those kids could end up oxygen-deprived if they didn't maneuver out properly because the cord can compress. They also could have broken clavicals, shoulders, nerve damage, etc. It can be scary, though it is rather rare.

Hopefully this is something they can tell before delivery and make a decision for the safest course of action for you.
  • It can be very serious and there was a scary birth story on the September board involving shoulder dystocia. I had a CALM growth ultrasound in order to determine my baby's risk as I am overweight. My risk category ended up being low so I'm opting for vaginal birth, but my OB advised to have a section if your risk category is moderate or high.

Can you ask for a growth scan?  Were you given a hand out of the CALM categories etc?

  • I tried vaginal birth with both of my babies. Unfortunately both ended in csection. Both never got their sholders engaged in the birth canal for whatever reason and wouldn't descend despite my best efforts. With DS they were going to use the vacuum but even then they said it would probably end up in a csection.

While I am not a huge fan of the csection process I am happy that I tried both times to deliver vaginally. I think I would have always wondered what could have happened. If your OB is willing to let you try I say go for it knowing you have a high chance of ending in the OR. If you go in with that mindset I don't think you will be too disappointed. Good luck!
