How do you handle off-limit items & LO?

DS is starting to give me a run for my money! The downstairs is all baby-proofed except for the dogs' water bowl(it has to be out for the dogs), dog door(stupid flap cover is on back order), my trash can.

I've been removing DS from the dog bowl(or other item), saying "no no, that's yucky." Now he is starting to either a.) throw a massive tantrum(arches back, head hits the floor, screaming & crying) or b.) laughs and runs away from the off-limits item as soon as I head toward him.

How are you handling situations like this?

  • I tell her to leave it alone. I save no for things that are dangerous or if I've already told her a time or ten. I walk to her and ask for whatever she has, take it and tell her thank you that it's not for babies and give her something else. Or take her to something else. Sometimes I tickle her or something to try to distract her if she starts throwing a fit, but if it lasts more than a second I set her down and walk away. She usually gets bored pretty quick.

  • We've been doing this a lot with DD2 and the river rocks in my potted plant (rocks are there to keep the cat from digging the dirt out).  She is obsessed with taking the rocks out and putting them in the dog's water dishes.  I don't say anything, I just pick her up and move her back to her toys.  At this age all you can do is barricade them from these areas or redirect.

  • Yeah, I figured redirecting was about all that can be done. I guess it's just good to know that other LO's are testing limits already, too!

Who knew tantrums started this early?!?

I was thinking the same thing this morning. If this is what it can be like at 11 months, I better start getting mentally prepared for the terrible twos... and threes!

  • The dogs' water and food is going to be the death of me!!

What I have found to work the best, is getting down on his level to where he looks at me and saying "no no" while removing his hand from it.  He usually looks at me and A) goes for it again (and we repeat the process) or B) just moves on to something else.

He still goes for it all the time so he hasn't learned that it is off limits (or maybe he just doesn't care!) but he has gotten a lot better about moving on when being corrected.

He also went through a stage where he was throwing MAJOR fits when putting him in the carseat.  It only lasted about a week and it was only when getting in the seat (not while riding) but he would arch his back and go rigid and it was freaking impossible to get him buckled in!! It took us a couple of minutes before we were actually ready to go anywhere because I just had to wait it out.  Glad that phase is over!

Thank goodness I'm not alone! He dunked a toy in there for the 1st time today. *sigh* DS does the same thing as your DS. Sometimes, he will stand right there and keep putting his hands in the water...over & over & over. Other times if I catch him before he sticks his hand in & I say "no no"; he will walk away before he even sticks his hand in. Guess it just depends on his mood. Haha, atleast I know that he will like a water table next spring! Wink

DS arches his back & protests the carseat a bit, every now & then. Thankfully it hasn't become a huge issue...YET....

Lol, I wish that trying to stick her hands in the dog water was all my LO did. She goes to it and tries to lap it up like the dogs do.

Umm, yeah DS has done that, once. Embarrassed He, also, tries to follow the dogs outside thru the dog door.

  • Yeah, I mostly just redirect before DD gets into anything more than I want her to.

But re: pet food/bowls....I sort of have it rigged right now so the cats can get to their food/water/cat box but DD is "discouraged" (read: hasn't figured out how to get there yet).  Basically, the cat stuff is in the utility room that is off of the kitchen.  I've "secured the perimeter" by having the PnP, a kitchen table chair and the kitchen table make a fence of sorts(it sounds complicated, but it's not really).  The cats can get around it just fine and I move the PnP or chair if I need to get over there, but DD hasn't explored enough to realize that she could navigate it if she wanted to (I think all the chair/table legs discourage her).  I'm just happy it works as a current deterrent!  I'm not sure what I'm going to do to keep her out of the cat food/water/box once she figures out how to get over there.  Tongue Tied  Oh dear...

Haha, DS is guilty with that but not quit as often! Last night I noticed him laying on the floor trying to drink the water and I realized he threw a piece of dog food in the bowl that he was trying to get! He also really likes to play with his pacis in the water. Oh goodness..

  • Pretty much everything for us is baby proofed and she's gated into our living room and dinning room (open floor plan) and has been for a while same with outlet covers but we just got those snap-in straps for the sliding doors on our TV stand. The biggest things are pulling stuff off the coffee table, messing with the computer when it's out or I'm using it and the heaters.

I say no with her full name and many times I'll follow it up with "not for baby" and then redirect her to something and tell her "for baby, baby's, Maya's, etc." if it's specifically grabbing at something I will hold her wrist and smack her lightly, but enough to make an impression, on her hand with a very hard, strict NO. This tends to get her attention the best and she will redirect herself, sometimes cry for a second but in the end she'll leave it be.

For a while she was doing the tantrums just like you described, lol today I saw her playing with the curtain and yelled at her and started to walk over to her and the little stinker laughed and crawled like a madwomen behind the couch, stopped in the middle and looked at me laughing hysterically!! Little turd!

  • Most of our house is fairly baby proofed now that he walks everywhere. We finally had to move our cat's water and food bowls by the front door next to the stairs where it's blocked by a gate. The cats just hop over the gate whenever it's up so it's a little easier than having dogs. (They are inside cats)

He loves cords and anything electronic so we try and just keep them out of sight. DH is the worst though because when he comes home he pulls out his lap top and sits down in a spot where DS can reach. So we have a lot of battles with him not touching. He does pretty well and after some gentle reminders from me, he really does try hard to not impulsively touch those things. You can actually see his mind trying to not do it...It's freaking hysterical and adorable all at the same time.

We just tell him "no-no...not Bradley's" when he is getting into something he's not suppose to but for the most part there is not too much trouble he can get into...at least not anything life threatening or anything that would be ridiculously expensive to replace.  I redirect when needed but I always give him the opportunity to do it himself first.

Oh and he is a pro at tantrum throwing when you take something from him or try and redirect him too. Plus he's a big fan of the going ridged when trying to strap him in.
