What is the Cell Free DNA test?

So my doctor dropped the ball and did not test me for the secondary genetics screening before 21 weeks. She suggested I can now get the Cell Free DNA test done, now that I am 25 weeks, but I have never heard of it? Anyone have this done? TIA!

I think he is referring to maternit21/harmony/verifi.  They isolate baby's cell free DNA circulating in your blood and test it for trisomy 21, 18, and 13.

     Hope that helps!

This is correct. There are three "brand names" (MaterniT21, Harmony, Verifi) that use the same technology: they draw blood from the mother and isolate the baby's DNA from the maternal blood sample to tell you (with 99% accuracy for T21 and T18 and about 92% accuracy for T13) if the baby has a trisomy. The big plus is that it is non-invasive. However, your insurance may not cover it so you should probably check with your insurance carrier.

MrsJami, I have my lab report from my own MT21 test right here, and under "Expected Laboratory Performance," it says "Trisomy 18: Sensitivity: >99.9% Specificity: 99.6%" I am not a scientist and maybe those are not the right numbers to be looking at, but they are both above 99%.
