So I've been working my way through registry completion, trying to decide what we need and do not need. I knocked out the BRU registry last week. We only spent $60 of our own money, because everything else was covered by gift cards. Now I'm looking at my amazon registry. To get the stuff I'd really like to have, plus the stuff we absolutely need, $622. Before completion coupon. OUCH! So now I'm like, I can do without this, and this, and this...
I'm also looking for a few more clothing items to round out his wardrobe. I would love for him to have some cute little outfits to wear to church/ holidays, but I won't spend $20 on a shirt for myself, let alone an infant! How is it that his clothes are so much tinier than mone but cost twice as much??? And I'm looking at my registry and I'm like wait, how much for that thing? Ladies, I do believe the world is trying to rip us off...
Re: Why is baby stuff so flipping expensive??!!??
Spent 300 at target yesterday (stupid completion coupon saved me like 10 bucks) BUT like OP had gift cards to cover almost 1/2 so felt very lucky... also bought things we COULD live without but thought would make it a lil easier for us to have.....
I think the clothes are the worst also .... I don't spend $$ on my clothes so its hard to be all "OK I'll pay 10 bucks for two lil pairs of leggings she can wear for a few weeks" Lucky going for ALOT of hand me downs.. and will be trying to organize some future clothing swaps.
i been saving money by hitting yard sales. i got a brand new pack n play with tags still on it never been out of the box from babies r us that cost $700 and i got it for $10.
I think I've spent a total of about $1200 on him, including his nursery paint, shelving, decorations, lamps, ceiling fan, etc. and finishing off the registries with getting everything he needed and most of what I wanted for him. I was too impatient to wait since he was acting like he was coming early, and DH's work gave him $180 cash the other day... So I got his last big item (exersaucer), one of the baby gates to try out and see if we like it before I buy two more, and I went ahead and got him his outfit for Christmas Eve/holiday pictures. If we get any more monetary or gift card gifts at this point, they'll be saved for future diapers, etc.
Fortunately, it was all covered by my husband's soccer coaching check (even though I've bitched about his coaching soccer about every day, ha).
I was thinking the same thing!
Same here! We just bought the brand new Chicco play yard and it was $199. I don't think I've seen one over $200 - at BRU!
If you need actual gear, hit up Mommy Markets and Craigslist. The only new stuff we had was gifts. Babies do not need as much as everyone is buying for them!
I actually like the challenge of cutting things off the registry. I want to be really minimalist about the baby gear thing so I actually find pleasure being strategic! I ended up registering for more than I needed because I felt like I needed to put a few things on there that would be fun for people to buy. Rectal thermometers don't really get people excited if you know what I mean.
I have to say that I am super frustrated with BRU. I think the coupons are a real tease and there are so many exclusions. The only store within 2 hours of me sucks. Nothing is in stock so all of those coupons you get from people don't do jack because they are "store only" so I had to order so much online. I'm just glad I had so many months to buy things so I could wait and watch for sales. I refuse to pay full price at BRU!
Why? Because they've got you by the short and curlies. Marketers know how much parents have bought into the concept of wanting the "best" for their baby, and so they're going to use your emotional insecurities and doubts to justify rediculous prices. It isn't that hard to figure out really.
Try checking your local Craigslist or Kijiji and see what's out there second hand. Kids don't know the difference, but your pocket book sure will!
Agreed. i'm pretty sure we spent less than $600 total with DS, and that includes his cloth diaper stash. i'm big on second hand. No way i'm spending full price on something that gets used for such a short time. Garage sales and consignment stores are my friends!
Yeah if you exclude nursery furniture, I guess we didn't spend that much. H had a heart attack when we went to get his crib. The ones he liked the best were all 6 and 700 bucks for just the crib. I found one I liked for $300, and talked him into that one. I'm being as minimalist as i can in MOST areas, our house is tiny and my husband has a stuff problem, so we don't have anywhere to PUT anything. We don't even have a stroller, people said I didn't need one right off the bat if I planned to wear him, so we skipped it. My sister has three strollers, if it turns out I need one, she only has one baby, he can't possibly use all three at once. I'll take one of those. I DID splurge on an Ergo carrier. Most of my spending is his cloth diaper stash and nursery items.
As far as baby clothes go, he has a bunch of the little layettes and pajama sets. i want to get him a nice outfit or two. Because he'll be arriving so close to the holidays, I want him to have something nice to wear to church at Christmas and to some of the things with H's family. They tend to dress nicely for family events. I'll feel dumb if I show up in a dress with my baby in his jammies. The cheaper places in my area don't seem to carry anything but layettes for infants. I want a little sweater or a button down. $20 is not even something I'm willing to entertain for him to wear five times tops. it looks like Gymboree might have some good stuff on clearance. Maybe I'll head there.
Word.
