I'm trying my best not to have any caffeine in the first tri. I figure I've been off of it since March due to IF treatments, so I should be able to handle it. But I'm soooo tired this week! Please tell me if you had any caffeine in the first tri, or later, and how much you had, and what kinds. Think I'll break out some chocolate (my main vice) while I'm waiting for your replies...

Re: tell me about your caffeine consumption while pg
I've been trying to avoid it totally--although I still drink decaf coffee (which has a little), hot cocoa and I eat chocolate.
I totally feel your pain.
Mr Dr told me that a cup per day wouldn't hurt. She said if I wanted a cup of coffee in the morning, have it - just don't KEEP drinking it (like 2, 3 or more cups!)
It's not hard for me because I've NEVER liked soft drinks or anything and I like coffee but I won't die without it lol...although a couple times, I've felt like I "needed" it and then I had a cup of coffee. I'd maybe just confirm what your Dr thinks would be best for YOU, before drinking any, jsut because some Dr's have different ideas/plans for their patients. Oh and I drink hot chocolate more often than anything else!

I have not had any since I started IVF in August. ?I get VERY VERY addicted to caffeine and I know I can't have just one. Lol. So no caffeine and I am 13 wks pregnant with twins. But my friend had a McDonalds Diet Coke almost everyday since she found out she was pregnant and she is 28 weeks pregnant. It was the only thing she could drink without getting sick.

All during my IVF cycle and the first tri I cut all caffeine. It was really hard, especially coffee.
After the first tri I started having the occassional soda...which I still do to this day. But I have yet to pick coffee back up, it's been since March!
I cut out caffeine completely about two years ago. I sometimes still had a soda now and then. But once I started IF treatment, I didn't even do that. Just my own choice, not because of something RE said.
Now that I'm pregnant, I'll steal a sip of dh's soda, but if I drink coffee, I stick to decaf. But I will never give up chocolate!!
I absolutely love fountain Coke!! I've had it a few times since being pregnant. It helps me with nausea (I know thats strange, but it helps settle my stomach) or I've had it if I'm dead tired. And even if I had it as a craving! I usually only have a 16 oz glass though, with lots of ice!!
I think you're allowed to have up to 300mg of caffeine a day, and one little coke is only like 27mg, so I figure I'm ok having one every now and then!!

I found an article last week (and posted it here) about how a cup of coffee a day can lead to low birth weight. Of course, there are many women who drank/drink a cup or more a day and go on to have big, healthy babies.
That being said, I don't drink coffee, drink decaf soda, but I have the occassional small bit of chocolate. GL!!
both my ob and acupuncturist were very much against having reg coffee during my IVFs and pregnancy (especially in the first trimester.) I ended up drinking 1 cup of organic decaf every morning and that was fine.
not drinking caffeine is just one of those things you have to sacrifice while pregnant. why risk it?

I've never been a huge caffeine person, but I do still occasionally (a few times a week) have some tea or pop and I certainly have not made any effort to avoid chocolate!
Keep it reasonable and I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I drank caffeine normally while going through IVF, and then once I got PG, I have one soda in the morning to give my body it's "fix".
I've heard that cutting it out cold turkey if you really are addicted to caffeine is actually harder on your body than just having one a day.

I drank 2 cans of diet coke daily with my dr's blessing. Even early on. I'm in the everything in moderation camp.
Let me just preface this by saying - I LOVE COFFEE. I used to have 1 cup everyday .... until I got pregnant. I just couldn't stand the smell/taste of it.
Starting mid-2nd tri, I got a taste for it again. I have it (from starbucks, still haven't made it at home yet) once - maybe twice a week. But I order decaf (although, it was shown that even that has caffeine in it).
I have about a soda 1-2 times per week, too. NOT on the days I have coffee, though.
And when I drink any caffeine, I made sure to have as much water as possible that day.
The only caffeine that I have had has come in the form of chocolate milk--and I've had, maybe, 6 glassees at most. Oh, and I have one decaf latte a week.
I'd rather err on the side of caution. But that's AMA me talking. For the most part, I went off of caffeine 2 years ago. (I fell off the wagon when we moved from Cali to Virginia--McDonalds Iced Coffees were my drink of choice during the long drive! LOL!)
I never cut out chocolate. That's crazy! There's so little caffeine - and I believe that chocolate is too good to pass up.
I had one soda (for a migraine) in my first tri, but managed to avoid all but a sip or two of coffee. Since I hit 12 weeks, I've had a small nation's share of hot chocolate, probably 2-3 cups of coffee, one latte, and a soda or two.
My OB said one cup of coffee a day is fine. He actually said he'd prefer that you drink regular coffee over decaf, because he has more concern about the chemicals used to take the caffeine out of decaf.
