Toddlers: 24 Months+

Disneyland tips

We are taking DD to Disneyland at the beginning of December.  This will be my first time there as well since we always went to Disney World growing up.  I'm looking for any general tips on Disneyland and tips on taking a 2 year old.

DD just turned 2 and I'm wondering how many days to plan at each of the two parks.  Is there enough at Adventure Land to entertain her for more than just one day?  We will be there for a full week but I think 5 days of parks might be too much for her.  I was thinking maybe M-W-F or MT-RF at the parks and then just planning 1-2 low key days where we hang out at the hotel pool, etc.

 TIA!

Re: Disneyland tips

  • We did Disneyland in May when DD was 20 months old.  As far as Adventure Land, I think one day is enough.  We had a three day pass, so I know we went at least two days, but didn't spend the full day there.  IMO it's more for older kids.  DD really liked the Mermaid ride and the Merry-Go-Round, but other than that we didn't see much for her.  Plus I just don't think it has the charm of the main park.

As far as how many days, I think that just depends.  We did 3 full days at the park, but could have done more.  That being said, it was DH and I, plus my parents and brother, so 5 adults for one kid.  Plus we had a town home within walking distance of the park, so every day we went home, napped and came back to the park which made a big difference.

You might also consider doing what we did, which was to go without a stroller.  My mother thought we were nuts, but I figured if we changed our minds we could always rent one.  We just brought the Ergo carrier and a backpack.  I thought it was so much easier to navigate the crowds, you didn't have to worry about parking the stroller, having something happen to it, etc.  I know it's not for everyone, but it worked well for us.

It is such a wonderful age for this!  We didn't really know that to expect from DD going into it.  We have always loved Disneyland and have gone plenty of times as adults, DD was still free to fly at the time, free to get into the park, so even if she didn't think much of it we figured what do we have to lose?  But DD LOVED it!  She still talks about it, we have to listen to her Disney music in the car and the other day she said to me, "Remember Disneyland, Mama?"  Yesterday we watched some of the home videos from there and after it was over she started crying and saying, "Want to climb in."  She wanted to climb into the TV :(

  • We have passes and go about once/twice a month. I would say you could make a day out of CA Adventure if you see some shows amd do all the rides. They have Bugs Life area which has rides for little ones, also the new Cars Land is really cool. DL will have the majority of what you will want though! You can always get a park hopper and go to both.

Have fun! You will have an amazing time!

  • We just took our 2.5 year old to Disneyland last weekend.  DD loved it (she's been talking about it non-stop ever since).  DH's mom lives in Orange County, so we stayed with her and just went for the day.  We also get into both parks for free because DH's grandfather worked there for many, many years, so DH's grandma is able to sign us in.  Because of this, we can go whenever we want, so we don't find it necessary to go for more than a day at a time.  But, if that weren't the case, I would definitely plan for 2 or 3 days there.

When we went, we spent the majority of the time at Disneyland.  Right now is a good time of year to go, because the lines are much shorter during the day since everyone is in school.  This might be true in December too, unless you're going close to the holidays.  Regardless, it gets much more crowded at night, so be sure to go on all of the poupular rides (e.g., It's a Small World) during the day.  There are also some apps that you can download to your phone that will tell you how long the lines are at each ride.  We found that really helpful.

Make sure you check to see what time the park closes each day.  Around the holidays, the park sometimes closes earlier because they have special holiday events at night.  The day we were there, the park closed at 7 for a Halloween event, so we went over to California Adventure at that time.  There isn't a ton for little ones at California Adventure.  The Bug section has a bunch of rides for little kids, though.  So we spent a couple of hours there before heading home.  I think 2 days at Disney and 1 day at California Adventure would be plenty.  5 days at the park sounds way too much to me.  There are other fun things to do in that area, so I would spend the rest of your time exploring So Cal.

     Have fun!
