Push for Xrays??

So when my DD was born the on call doctor that turned into her pedi. Told us that her foot was turning inward. He reassured us it was not big deal and taught us massages that would help her build the muscle to straighten it. When we went for her 4 month appointment he said it looked 130% better and he wasn't worried.

However, over the past few months I think it is getting worse. My mother, who ran a daycare for 30 years and has seen tons of babies seems to agree with me. I am afraid when I take her to the doctor this week, he will recommend watching and waiting.

I am not okay with this...I know the next step is xray as we have discussed it when she was born. Is it wrong of me to push for xrays just to be 100% sure?

Re: Push for Xrays??

  • I don't know if I would push for xrays but i would probably get a second opinion.

When N was born his left foot was pushed up and the top of his foot was flat against his leg, they taught us massages to do and it was mostly better but I was still concerned so i got a referal to a pediatric orthopedist who checked him out and taught us other excercises and now his foot is completely better and normal.

I hope everything works out and that her foot is ok.

  • Either push for xrays or get a second opinion.  Or see if you can get a referral to a pediatric orthopedist like beth.

  • I'd get a referral to a pediatric orthopedist.

They are really hard to find, but it's worth it to have a specialist see them.

Says the parent of a child who broke her leg at 14m that went undiagnosed by 4 providers.....

  • I don't think so. My feet were both turned inward when I was born. I ended up needing casts on both my feet as a baby to straighten them out. I would not want to risk waiting, as our babies are getting to the mobile stage. I would want this problem taken care of now.

  • What do you mean by 'turning in?'  Are they thinking of club foot - like where the sole of the foot is facing the ankle on the other?  As PPs have all mentioned, I would go to a pediatric orthopedic doc to get a second opinion.

  • The doc said it is like the opposite of club foot...It has a name but of course I can't come up with it today!

  • And if you need help finding a pediatric orthopedist call your health insurance company....they can tell you the names and information of the closest specialists to you that are in network (I work for an insurance company , i do this all day) :) Good luck!

  • I'd go to a pediatric orthopedic specialist!  My feet turned outward when I was an infant and nothing was done about it.  When I was 14 I had to have my subtalar joints fused in both feet (the joint that adjusts to uneven ground) because they were deteriorating.  They think if I had been treated younger, I wouldn't have had the problems and wouldn't be dealing with the longterm effects of the surgeries and problems that came out of it.  We are keeping a very close eye on my LO's feet and I will go to a specialist at the first sign of any problems.

  • How do you notice about feet turning in and out until they are walking? Just curious. Is it like, when she's just sitting there her foot looks weird?

When Matilda "stands up" on us, she definitely has weird foot stuff going on but I assumed it was because she's so young and not ready to actually stand yet.

  • not sure where you are located - but if there is a Shriners Hospital in your area you could try there as well.   They deal specifically with orthopedic issues and most of the time, it is free of charge.

Also, if you come up with the name of the condition....I'm curious as to what it is.  I'm an orthotist, so I deal with bracing everyday!

  • Im honestly not sure how it was first noticed. The doc noticed it first. My DH and I decided right away we weren't going to make a thing of it and tell everyone. She was only a week old when my mother and sister both noticed. It just doesn't lay right.
