Baptism

So I scheduled DS2 baptism today, and DH and I have god parents in mind but we might have to change the god father now! He is catholic, baptized but not confirmed, and when I asked if it was going to be a problem they said yes.

DH is not catholic,so he is annoyed. For DS1 we used a friend as a "christian witness" and that worked out fine because he was not catholic, but because this friend is catholic we cannot use him as a "christian witness." ugh!!!

Re: Baptism

  • Can you lie and say he is not Catholic?

  • lol, that's what my mom said too. You need to give a baptism certificate to them to show proof. It just sucks that because he was not confirmed he cannot be E's god father.

  • they make you show proof?! thats craziness.
  • For our the Godmother we chose, they just requested a letter from her church confirming her faith.  I brought that in with me and we were all set.  The Godfather (it was a husband/wife) practiced Catholicism but wasn't officially converted, so he was a Christian witness.

Yeah it would be easy if our friend was a different faith, then he would just need a baptism record from their church, but since he is baptized catholic he needs some "sponser certificate" to show he was baptized, made his communion, and was confirmed. The form that I read said anyone who is catholic cannot be a christian witness, which I think is silly.

Sorry, I should clarify.  The Godmother we chose was Catholic, but not of our Parish.  All she needed was a letter from HER parish, saying she was an active Catholic member.  They didn't ask for proof of her confirmation or anything.  Here are the rules from my church:
A person who is 16 years old, baptized and confirmed and who is a practicing Catholic may be a Godparent, also called a sponsor. One is required: two are permitted, provided one is male and the other female. A baptized Protestant who is practicing the faith of Jesus and who is at least 16 years old may be one of the two Godparents (and is called a Christian Witness) but is not considered a sponsor.

In our case, the Godfather was a practicing Catholic (but not officially a converted Catholic) and was permitted to be a "Christian Witness".

  • oh, ok I see. That makes sense. Our friend is not an active member at a church, so that is probably going to be an issue. If it were up to me I would try to use someone who we can use as a "christian witness", but DH really wants to use our friend, and he really wants to do it. He is even thinking about going to another church, or getting confirmed. We shall see what happens! Thanks for sharing your info with me!
