Nurseries and Baby Gear

What do I need?

I need help! What are the must haves and top brands? I have been on Babies R Us for over two hours and registered for one item. I am just afraid what I pick is not a good item. I want the good stuff that is going to last. Carseats freak me out, I want to breastfeed, I need a good stroller and perferablly a jogging one (should I get a regular one also or just get a regular one). I am so overwhelmed and need help please. THANKS!

Re: What do I need?

  • I think it's easy to get overwhelmed because there are soooo many options out there. One suggestion, take it one big item at a time. I.e. start with Carseat and do some research. See which ones you like for safety, size, portability, etc. and move on from there.

I also found it helpful to read some blogs- Lucies list sends you a must-have list of basic registry items.

Once you start to familiarize yourself with some products and brands, you will start to feel more comfortable with it all. And remember... You can always go to the store to get things you find ourself needing,

Ditto PP, that book makes it much easier to narrow the options.

  • I'd go to a store and test drive some things; that's the only way you're going to get a feel for it. Talk to the sales associates and to other moms. But most of all, don't stress. Newborns actually need very little. A place to sleep, a car seat, some clothes and swaddle blankets. Oh, and diapers. Everything else can be bought afterward when you get a sense of what you do and don't need.

  • Definitely check out Baby Bargains! I swear I toted that book around with me EVERYWHERE when we were first researching all the big stuff!

  • Baby Bargains was a huge help for us!  We highlighted and tabbed everything, then once we registered, a mommy friend and I met for dinner and she went through what she thought I didn't need and what I missed.  The combination between the two were super helpful and made it a much better experience.

  • Like a PP said, definitely go to the store and do some test driving. What I thought I wanted for a stroller I wound up hating and went a completely different way. Even if all the features are there, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like pushing it or what the ride feels like. You just don't know until you use it. Even infant carriers feel different when you pick them up. It's worth a trip for sure.
