'Real' toothpaste - teaching them to spit?

DD will be 2 next week and we're still using the 'training' toothpaste, wanted to switch her to regular but she doesn't get the whole spitting thing. How did you teach your LO w/ out them thinking it was just funny, lol. :) Or do you even worry about it?

Re: 'Real' toothpaste - teaching them to spit?

  • I started using fluoride toothpaste at 2 1/2 and dd got the spitting immediately... Ds was not spitting regularly until after age 3... So I just tried to use very little toothpaste and ncouraged him to spit every time even tho he didn't for a long time. GL it will come eventually even if not at first.

  • We are still using the training toothpaste and have just started teaching her to rinse and spit. She can drink from an open cup, so we have her drink a little water and remind her to swish it in her mouth, then spit. She loves it and I think we'll be ready to switch to regular toothpaste soon.

  • We switched to real toothpaste at 3 yrs old after her first dentist trip.  She didn't know how to spit and it take about a month or so to get that.  I might wait to switch, because they really need to spit it out.  Teaching them how?  I just showed her how to spit and she finally figured it out on her own.

  • We switched to real toothpaste at 3 as well. DD wouldn't spit regularly enough for me to do it sooner. Now she knows it's not good if she swallows and can understand better.
