Vomiting - when to call pedi?

During LO's first 3 weeks of life we had a lot of burping/spit-up issues, probably pretty normal.  Starting last week it graduated to vomiting.  Over the weekend it seemed to be more frequent, and a bit more projectile.  It seems like such a large volume and I'm so worried she isn't getting enough milk in her belly.  She still seems to be eating well and (i think) gaining weight.

I have an appointment Wednesday... but should I call tomorrow?

Re: Vomiting - when to call pedi?

  • I would.. especially if it's in large amounts and you're worried about her having milk in her tummy. Idk when it becomes a concern, I've read when it's bloody or weird colors but I don't really know. Hope she's okay!

Is she still having the right amount of dirty/wet diapers? GL!

  • Yes, wet/dirty diapers are consistent, and the right #.

What could the issue potentially be?  Reflux?  I do the simethicone (sp?) gas drops before her feedings during the nighttime (~3 times total per night).  I'm really not sure how much those are helping.

  • We have silent reflux this time and feeding he is on Zantac now and much better usually had him whining, grunting, arching his back...it wasn't pretty. DS1, however, was healthy and just fine most of the time but his tummy could not handle gas drops. Like at all. He puked like no other on those. Maybe a thought?

  • And as to call th doc: I think, as long as there is nothing funky about the vomit blood, colors, and her wet / dirty diapers are met, I would wait til Wednesday. BUT if you are worried, give them a shout, nothing like peace of mind.

BTW, if you think her vomit does look off, take a pic for the doctor. Makes it so much easier for them to see the whole problem.

  • Is it every feed? Does she act hungry after and want to eat again? I would call

Yes, every feed. She has been eating more frequently but seems satisfied even after vomiting.

The puke is normal, usually straight milk, sometimes a little chunky. Always milkcolored and no foul smell.

  • It sounds like reflux. If she's throwing up enough to not have any milk left, she wouldn't be gaining weight. Plus she would be hungry all the time. If you're worried, call the dr today.

  • Is this projectile vomiting every time? Is it getting more frequent? Not to scare you but DS1 had spit up issues which eventually turned into projectile....low and behold he had pyloric stenosis. He was never fussy when he vomited and never responded to the reflux meds. He was just puking really far!!

Although it typically happens in first born white males, females can have it too. It typically appears between 34 weeks of age.

Newly projectile vomit makes me think of this too.  I would definitely check with your doctor.

  • I was thinking the same thing about pyloric stenosis. It won't hurt to call

  • I would definitely call the dr. DD was already tested for PS. We have already switched rxs and formula. However, she is still vomiting after every feed, We go in for weekly weight checks, as well!
